Not so, as noted. I sold my APO 90-280 due to infrequent use, not because of any IQ deficiencies. It held its market value. But I keep the excellent 24-90 for regular use, creating modest sized prints that stand up well to those using my SL 75 APO, which I also sold due to lack of use. Viewers don’t know or care about any distinctions when the pic is worthy and I do my job well producing a fine print. Modern zooms can produce superb results. This is especially the case with IBIS, focus aids, etc from modern cameras like the SL, where handheld use can often provide greater technical IQ than results from stellar prime lenses on film bodies, or even from current M digital bodies subject to RF calibration issues, shaky hands, etc. Even more so if the zoom itself has OIS, like both the 90-280 and 24-90. None of the SL APO primes, even the 90, have the same. And some would say the SL APO lenses (especially 35) are also “heroic” in size. This is not to say that laws of physics and optics don’t apply. A stellar prime surely can have technical advantages. Practically speaking, however, I’d rather carry my 24-90 than the 6 equivalent focal length SL primes (if a 24 APO even existed), and still get superb results. But thankfully Leica feeds off the profits from gear testers, GAS sufferers, pixel peepers, and the few that make huge prints. -

Never heard of the term Chiauoscuro before (ignoramus!). Realized that it is a natural technique of mine in many instances. I learn something every day. A quickie from yesterdays shoot. Leica M7 & 75mm cron shooting Delta 400.
