The person I bought it from said they bought it from a seller in Japan a few years ago. And they got the lens CLA'd (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust) this year. Serial Number: 125167 It weighs 111 grams when there's no caps on it. It has "50mm" instead of "5cm" written on the front of the lens, which it would indicate that it's an earlier model I believe. There's an "o" on the barrel by the focus lever, which would indicate that this is a standardized lens mount. Underneath the focus leaver there's the number 5 (as shown in the picture), I don't know what this means. I think the focus lever is at the 11 o'clock position? I'm not sure how to tell. I tested it and found: 105 cm / 41 inch closest focusing distance. The rear plate has distances in feet. I don't know if Leica sent certain countries a different plate, or if it was replaced by a distributor, or if it was replaced in the decades after it was first sold. Interestingly enough there's no "Germany" or "Made in Germany" that I see on other exported lenses. Hello everyone! Just recently I came upon a wonderful set of the Leica IIIC together with 3 (seemingly in mint condition) lenses. The SN of the camera itself is 374588 and the only information I could gather is that it was manufactured in 1940. More about the lenses - elmar 3,5 cm, summitar 5cm, SN 559993, thambar 9cm SN 540124. There are some more additional bits and bops in the set. I tried to make my own research but couldn't find much on the internet. Can any of you, professional Leica users/keen fans let me know more about the history of these items? I am more curious other than anything. -
Hello guys, my name is Mat, I'm from Argentina. About a year ago I started shooting street photography with a Fuji X100T and for the last few weeks I've been really wanting to try and buy an M3, so I did it. I bought one, in a trusty camera shop here in Buenos Aires, and it seemed to work well, film advance, all shutter speeds and rangefinder worked well so I had no doubt about it and went for it. After about 3 hours of leaving the store, I sat on a bench to load some film and try it, when I removed the bottom plate a big chunk of the vulcanite broke down and fell, didn't even mind about that because it's replaceable, so I started shooting, finished a roll and left it to be developed and scanned. When I got back home later that day, I was fiddling with it and put the shutter speed dial in 1 sec, fired the shutter and heard it open but never close back, instantly I called the guys at the shop and told them this two problems, they told me to bring the camera to them the next day and that they'd take care of the service charges. Today I left the camera on the shop and went to the lab for the scans and the negatives, when I got home I saw this: And this: Some photos had this "vignette"-like thing that looked like the photos were Extremely underexposed on one side/"correctly" exposed in the middle/overexposed on the other side, for example: AND, the few photos that looked "fine" had this weird black line on one side like this: This one has all of the problems at once: And there's this one that looks fine without any problems besides the shitty quality of the scan: I do not really know if the problem is part of this shutter curtains issue, or if it's the lens, by the way I'm using an Elmar 50mm 2.8, maybe I didn't extend it all the way it should be extended or it might be another problem, but please note that this is my first experience with an M camera and I still don't have the skills that the M call for. I can't choose between Elmar 24 3.8 or Elmarit 28mm 2.8 Who has used both and know what lens is better, I know this is a dull question since it depends on what I'll be doing with it... but just in regular which do you think is a better companion for my M8?

I've compared a few classical Leitz/Zeiss lenses at the NEX-5N - maybe someone ist interested: NEX-5N and classical 50mm Zeiss / Leitz lenses 1) Leitz Elmar 5cm 1:3.5, uncoated (1936) 2) Zeiss Jena Sonnar LTM 5 cm 1:1.5, coated (1941) 3) Leitz Summarit 5cm 1:2, coated (1952) 4) Zeiss Jena Biotar 5.8cm 1:2, cooated (1953) 5) Zeiss Jena Tessar 5cm 1:2.8, coated (1956) 6) Zeiss Planar ZM 2/50mm (2005) 7) Zeiss C-Sonnar ZM 1.5/50mm (2005) I'ts just a small comparison - but better than nothing. I am a new Leica M9 user and I bought my camera with a 50mm Summicron f/2. Doing a lot of travelling I felt last week in Chicago that I really need to go wide when shooting skylines, architecture and interiors (it was the art museum). In two weeks I will go to India and I really want something before that trip. I have been thinking of both the Super Elmar M 21mm and the Elmarit M 28mm ASPH and I am going back and forth between them. I am quite well aware of the positives and negatives of them but cannot make up my mind! What would be the recommendation from you using these lenses today in your daily photography and when traveling?

This is going to be a bit of a newbie question as I am sure that folks on this forum probably hate the idea of mating a zoom to a rangefinder. I use a number of primes with my M and love them all but for the sake of occasional convenience and longer focal lengths I am considering an M-R adapter with possibly a Vario Elmar 70-210 or preferably the 80-200 (assuming I can find either). Does anyone have any experience of either of these two lenses on an M and are they any good? Is one better than the other because I notice that the 80-200 f/4 is a heck of a lot more money - if you can find one. Thanks for any advice.

I recently acquired a Leica II screw mount camera with a collapsible Leitz Elmar 50mm f/3,5 lens. The 81587 serial number on the camera body seems to date it to 1932. But I am really curious about the lens. The rotating barrel with the depth of field markings has a three digit serial number… “420” – not the six-digit number that seems to have started around 1933. There is no “o” engraved near the lens focus lever although there is an “o” engraved in the 12 o’clock position of the lens mount on the camera. I assume that this is the original lens that came with the camera. My questions are: 1) When was this Elmar lens made? 2) Was it designed to specifically match my Leica II camera body? 3) Will it work correctly on other Leica screw mount cameras? Thanks for any information you can provide.

Can someone tell me if this is truly a triplet? From what I know the knurled focus ring and 39mm thread suggest this is of Walter Mandler designed triplet. It is also bayonet mount But all Serial number lists suggest its made in 1962: 1 913 001-1 967 100: 1962 According to Erwin Puts it is made in 1964: 4/90mm, Elmar , 3-element lens, 1964. This lens is a Canadian design and with only three single elements, a case-study of optical simplicity. Its full aperture performance is better than that of the predecessor with the classical 3 group/4 element construction. Overall contrast is a bit higher, the definition of fine detail has improved edge contrast and especially the performance in the field is much better. Vignetting is .7 stops. At 1:4 the contrast gets visibly higher and now very fine detail is recorded over the whole image area with good clarity. The Elmarit 1:2.8/90mm at 1: 4 cannot equal the 3-element Elmar here. Stopping down further brings in finer detail and at 1:11 we find image quality of a thoroughly modern level. This lens has been introduced at the same time as the Tele-Elmarit 1:2.8/90mm, which replaced the Elmarit 1:2.8/90mm. As the Tele-Elmarit could not be used with the bellows attachment and had not the best performance at closer distances, Leitz offered the Elmar as a lens for these applications. Close up performance is quite good. Distortion is negligible. It does show the intriguing strategy of fine tuning the lens performance for a specified set of tasks. It was not possible in those days to create one general purpose lens and so Leitz optimised the designs in different directions. A luxury that could not be extended indefinitely as it was a costly strategy. With modern glasses, this lens would deliver a very interesting performance. Any insight would be appreciated? I hope I am not violating any rules by quoting Puts? If it truly is, What is the value of this lens in decent condition, not mint but pretty nice? Thanks in advance.

Out with the M2 with its 35mm Elmar on the front (only lens I have). I took this with my OM/Zuiko too, and have just decided I like this better although the detail and flare and (actually) the exposure's better on the OM image, I like the look of this more. On the South Downs in recent snow. Anyone would think us English never get any snow. Well; we don't! Jim.

Morning all. I have just one lens for my M2; an Elmar 35mm. I'm wondering about a Summaron 35mm. If anyone would be kind enough to respond to a couple of questions I'd be grateful. Question 1. Does the front of a Summaron rotate with focussing in the same way it does with the Elmar? Reason for asking; the lens hood I have also rotates and I have modded it (with nothing more permanent than PVC tape) to be rectangular as I shoot into the light a lot and benefit from as much shielding as possible. This rotating is a complete pain and it would be good if the hood stayed square to the camera. If the Summaron's front also rotates, what is the earliest 35mm lens that accepts a hood that doesn't rotate in this way? Question 2. Is the f3.5 Summaron as good at f3.5 as the f2.8 is at f3.5? I can live with f3.5 but wondered if there was any penalty for not buying an f2.8. Many thanks all, Jim.

Werte Gemeinde! Lange habe ich mit M6 und 35 / 50 / 90 mm fotografiert. Seit kurzem besitze ich nun eine M8 und hätte hierfür gerne eine kürzere Brennweite. Nur kann ich mich nicht entscheiden, welches Objektiv es nun sein soll. Zur Auswahl stehen (in Klammern kurz meine Überlegungen): Elmar 18 mm (spektakulärer Winkel, relativ geringe Lichtstärke, Sucher benötigt, relativ günstig) Elmar 24 mm (noch günstiger, relativ geringe Lichtstärke, kompakt, kein Sucher nötig) Ein günstiges gebrauchtes Elmarit ohne Asph - wie ist das im vergleich zur aktuellen Version? Da blieben noch ein paar Euro übrig ... Elmarit 21 oder 24 mm Asph neu (höhere Lichstärke, tolle Verarbeitung) Zeiss 2,8 / 21 mm (günstig - aber auch nicht so wertstabil?) Summilux kann ich mir leider nicht leisten. Meine Aufstellung ist sicher nicht vollständig. Ich tue mich mit der Entscheidung jedenfalls unglaublich schwer, obwohl ich einige der Objektive auch schon ausprobieren konnte (aber eben nicht alle ...) Daher wäre ich an Euren Meinungen interessiert! Beste Grüße Carsten

Hello all: I am beginning to explore the world of old and older Leitz lenses for my M cameras. I recently purchased a 1935 50mm f3.5 Elmar (uncoated LTM, used with a LTM to M adapter ring) and just got a 1955 50mm f2.0 LTM Summitar (again, LTM with LTM to M adapter). I just saw a SOOTF adapter for sale, advertised as allowing the use of filters for the Summitar on the Elmar. Is that so? Also, can "swing-out" polarizing filters be used on the Summitar? I have one for my Summicron (V3) and another for my Summilux (V1 - 1959). Were any made for the Summitar? Thanks to all of you for your help. Guy

I am new here but now I have found this site I will be a regular. I have a M5 and the standard lenses. However one lens is causing me some curiosity and I hope someone can help. My curious lens is a Elmar 90mm f4. It is the serial number that is confusing me. Serial number = 1080960. According to other sites this number relates to a lens built in 1953, it doesn't look anywhere near that old. The same site does not list any of this lens with the number above. It is of chrome construction, ribbed focussing and aperture ring and a leather sleeve at the mount end and is bayonet mount. Can anyone help with identifying this lens, its history, construction, pros and cons?

Hi everybody! First of all, if this is the wrong forum for a repair-type question, please forgive a newbie and point me in the right direction... So: I just got my first Leica this past weekend - a 1956 M3, DS converted to SS. Seems to work fine so far. Anyway, the seller included an extra lens for free because it's not fully functional... It's a screw-mount Elmar 9cm 1:4 (90mm f/4), non-collapsable. It seems to be in mostly decent shape except that the aperture ring doesn't adjust the aperture. It's stuck most of the way open, and the ring just rotates without changing the opening. I see two screw holes on the aperture ring, but no screws. I'm guessing there are supposed to be set screws that make the ring adjust the aperture. My question: Are the screws tough to find for this? If so, I'm hoping that's all it takes to fix the aperture. It would be nice to turn a freebie into a usable portrait lens. I don't think it would be worth the money to send it in for repair based on what these go for on eBay or KEH. Any thoughts?

Hallo Freunde der analogen Fotografie, seit einer Weile fotografiere ich nun schon analog, erst mit einer Canon AE1 und jetzt mit einer Olympus OM1, da ich vollmechanische Kameras mehr mag, so kommt es auch, dass ich mir jetzt eine alte Leica zulegen will. Da mein Budget als Schüler begrenzt ist und ich Schraubleicas bald schöner als dass M-System finde, habe ich meine Suche auf die IIIF, IIIC und IIIG eingegrenzt, wobei die IIIG auch schon fast zu teuer ist. Dazu soll es noch ein schönes Elmar, Summitar oder sogar Summicron sein. Da ich Händlern generell mehr vertraue bin ich auf 2 Angebote gestoßen: Leica IIIC mit Summitar 50mm f/2 und Beli für 500€: https://www.meister-camera.com/de/gebraucht/5297/leica-iii-c Leica IIIF VLW mit Elmar 50mm f/2 für 445€: https://www.leica-store-muenchen.de/de/gebraucht/15166/leica-iiif-vlw-3550mm Ich weiß wirklich nicht, welches Angebot ich nehmen soll, da beide Kameras ziemlich gleich sind (Der Blitzanschluss der IIIF ist mir egal). Die IIIC hat halt noch einen Belichtungsmesser und das bessere Objektiv für Naturlichtfotografie, jedoch, hat Sie kein Rückgaberecht, der Zustand ist schlechter (das Chrome blättert ab), sie hat Selbstauslöser (eigentlich ein cooles Feature, was jedoch kein Muss ist) und ich habe von vielen gehört, dass es nur selten ist, dass man ein Summitar ohne Kratzer findet, da dass Glas sehr weich ist. Objektiv und Kamera sind beide von ca. 1949/50. Die IIIF hat an sich ein (licht-)schwächeres Objektiv (ist das ein großer Unterschied?), keinen Belichtungsmesser (welchen ich eigentlich nicht wirklich brauche, jedoch ist dieser ganz nett) und ist ein Umbau (was nicht unbedingt schlecht ist?). Jedoch hat der Body einen besseren Zustand, die Kamera hat ein Rückgaberecht und ist 50€ günstiger. Der Body ist auch so von 1949/50, von dem Objektiv kenne ich aber Jahr, was auch bedeuten könnte, dass es keine Vergütung hat. Ich gehe bei beiden Kameras davon aus, dass ich sie noch justieren lassen muss, dazu will ich sie für 120€ zu Oleg Khalyavin schicken, hat da jemand Erfahrung?
