kenneth Posted May 4, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) With the recent discussions in and around Kodachrome transparencies I am very interested to know when members last dusted down thier projectors, set up thier screens and viewed thier slides? I, for one cannot remember how long ago it was but if I had to make a guess it must be 6 months ago. Certainly my Leica Pradovit 300 projector must be my most underused piece of Leica equipment albeit, when I get my ass into gear and set it up, I always ask myself why I don't set it up more often. In my opinion there is no better way to enjoy the supreme quality of Leica lenses than through a projector on a large screen. It is usually an activity I practice alone nowadays as I have often seen friends take on that tied of living look when I have shown slides in the past. When I was involved in the outdoors industry I used to give slide presentations on a regular basis but now I am retired it is usually a solitary pursuit enjoyed behind closed doors

NZDavid Posted May 4, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 4, 2009 Thanks for the reminder, Kenneth. Now it's nearly winter on this side of the planet it's a good time for slides. We really enjoy seeing them on the big screen. It feels like stepping into the scene and rekindles travel memories -- more so than viewing on a computer. I got a Leica Pradovit IR with the Super Colorplan lens a couple of years ago and am delighted with it. Leica's new digital projector is doubtless excellent -- but have you seen the price? Yikes! aesop Posted May 4, 2009 Share #3 Posted May 4, 2009 ...never had one of my own because I had access to several - methinks it is time to pick one up. Per NZDavid, nothing beats the big screen.
maxspbr Posted May 4, 2009 Share #4 Posted May 4, 2009 I use my projector a lot. Once per month is the usual, sometimes more. And a few friends like to shoot slides too, and we make meetings, etc.
Guest Joachim_I Posted May 4, 2009 Share #5 Posted May 4, 2009 Yesterday. As a matter of fact, I always have two projectors (35mm and 6x7) built up and ready for use. I regularly use both projectors. I mounted 424 slides from a trip to China last weekend (all taken with MP and Tri-Elmar) and very much enjoyed the outcome. Joachim
MattLain Posted May 4, 2009 Share #6 Posted May 4, 2009 a few days ago. I'm doing a lot of work with projected slides and projected film. viewing slides in a big black space is mesmerizing.
Sandokan Posted May 4, 2009 Share #7 Posted May 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I set up my Rollei at the end of March to see some 6x6 slides taken recently. The slow shutter speeds on my Yashica were too fast and most of the slides were underexposed.
spydrxx Posted May 4, 2009 Share #8 Posted May 4, 2009 I had mine out about 3 weeks ago, and probably 3 years before that it sat in the closet. I had forgotten how good slides looks. Funny, out of sight, out of mind.
ken_nyus Posted May 4, 2009 Share #9 Posted May 4, 2009 What would you folks recommend for someone looking to buy a slide projector? The choices seem slim.
NZDavid Posted May 5, 2009 Share #10 Posted May 5, 2009 Easy Ken, a Leica Pradovit model plus Colorplan or Super Colorplan 90mm lens.
bscott Posted May 5, 2009 Share #11 Posted May 5, 2009 I keep my projector ready and I use it on average every three weeks. I really enjoy viewing slides with my wife and friends.

KM-25 Posted May 5, 2009 Share #13 Posted May 5, 2009 (edited) I have a 90 2.5 Colorplan-P CF lens but no projector, they seem to be scarce as the moment. And honestly, I have no idea which projector it goes with, I might even have the wrong lens...? Edited May 5, 2009 by KM-
dritz Posted May 5, 2009 Share #14 Posted May 5, 2009 Last week (a Leica RT). I use it about twice a month. Nothing like a high quality image chain end-to-end.
leica dream Posted May 5, 2009 Share #15 Posted May 5, 2009 Not had mine out for several months. It is an Aldis 505 with a bulb like a valve. Not sure one could even get a replacement bulb these days.....or perhaps at terrific cost. The unit is now over 50 years old but still does its job, even though one could probably boil a kettle on the top after it has been running for an hour or so! It buckles transparencies a treat if they are not between glass. Oh, well, technology moves on and my decision has been to digitize my transparencies and print key shots rather than replace the projector. anabasis Posted May 7, 2009 Share #16 Posted May 7, 2009 I pull it out every time I get a roll of slide film back. That has been a few weeks now, but I still like viewing the chromes projected. It's viewing them as they were intended and they truely shine that way. I got my Kodak projector used in 2004 for all of $20 at an antiques store. I think the woman was just glad to be rid of it. Guest Joachim_I Posted May 7, 2009 Share #18 Posted May 7, 2009 What would you folks recommend for someone looking to buy a slide projector? The choices seem slim. For 35mm I would recommend the projector NZDavid and I use: a Leica Pradovit IR with a Super-Colorplan lens. These items were recently discontinued and as a result can be bought really cheap these days (at least in Europe). A side note: Ulrich Goetschmann, the creator of the Goetschmann 6x7 projectors, retires by the end of June. Fortunately, his business is taken over by another Munich based company. This is good news for all 6x7 slide projection enthusiasts like me. My Goetschmann projector is simply the best piece of photography equipment I ever bought. leica dream Posted May 7, 2009 Share #19 Posted May 7, 2009 <<In my opinion there is no better way to enjoy the supreme quality of Leica lenses than through a projector on a large screen>>Agree! Fernando. I agree totally with Fernando - digital prints just do not match up but are a "necessary evil" for ease of quick viewing. antistatic Posted May 8, 2009 Share #20 Posted May 8, 2009 About 3 weeks ago. I have a friend and although she is the younger side of 40, she is a self confessed luddite. She shoots almost exclusively Velvia on her Canon SLR . We regularly have "slide-offs" and constructively critique each other's work. My wife joins in as the impartial judge. Probably not the standard idea of a good night in but actually great fun.
