180mm Elmarit-R at f/2.8 with SL . . . utility pole is about 10 meters away . . .

For eight or nine years I shot with the APO version almost daily.  Now I know what it was missing . . .

Subjectively speaking, the Mandler-esque rendering that the non-APO has.

I also prefer the drag on the focusing ring of the non-APO.  The APO was too easy to jar out of focus.

180mm Elmarit-R with APO-Extender-R 2X on SL . . .

I Agree. I had a lot of versions of Leica-R 180mm: the Apo-Summicron-R 180/2, the Apo-Elmarit-R 180/2.8, the Apo-Telyt-R 180/3.4 and the Elmarit-R 180/2.8 V2. IMHO, the best one of all: the Apo-Summicron-R 180/2 but heavy, too much heavy in his range. I liked very much the Apo-Telyt-R one at infinity distance, his minimum focus distance is an issue for me. The Apo-Elmarit-R 180/2.8 is a Leica one but very modern about his contrast, the bokeh is not my cup of tea. The Elmarit-R 180/2.8 V2 is the one I kept: the cheaper one with a magnificent bokeh and very easy to use. Besides, I can convert it with Apo-Extender-1.4x to an excellent Non-Apo 250/4.
