First shots with the CL, picked up yesterday from Leica Mayfair. I traded in the TL2 and 23mm, so these are all with the 60mm for the moment.

All shots raw SOOC, converted in LR (embedded profile - no Adobe profile available), A-mode, AWB, spot focus, spot exposure (with exposure compensation where necessary).

A couple of comments on focus. As one might anticipate, field focus struggled to pick up the small targets in these shots. Spot focus was generally fine, but I forgot I had it set on range-limited focus; for macro shots, I had to manually focus the 60mm into the macro range (half press on the shutter button, turn the focus ring) before AF would pick up the target. I'll try again later with range-limited focus switched off.

Moving the focus point on such a small camera with a smallish dial is fiddly, but I'll get used to it.

Once in the macro range, these focused easily.

Very nice, but what lens were you using?

Sorry, reading back to front, now I see that you are using the TL 60 macro, which makes sense.

Did I read that correctly that they switched the meaning of the two dials around, ie, the right dial is now aperture and the left dial is now exposure time?  Didn't that drive you insane?

Not really - the CL feels sufficiently different from the TL2 in the way you use it that it is just one of a number of different things I'm learning from scratch. The dials are in a different position in relation to my thumb, and the buttons on the dials open up a range of customisation and quick access. It would be a good future customisation option though, to allow you to switch the dials.

In A-mode (which is what I use most), I typically set aperture first (the marginally less easily accessible RH dial) and then fiddle with exposure compensation (the more easily accessed LH dial). I doubt I would switch it around even if I could.

In S-mode on the other hand, shutter speed is set with the LH dial - for the same reasons of priority of use and accessibility, I would want it on the RH dial with EC on the left.

I have set up three basic user profiles (default, flash, manual focus), but the way customisation of the dial buttons and the Fn button works is different from what I'm used to, and it will take me a while to develop settings that are useful but not too complicated. It's not as simple as assigning one function to one button.

My CL box didn't contain the manuals - the store aren't sure if they were accidentally omitted at the factory, or they haven't been printed yet. Even without them, I found it easy to work out how to use the CL just by working through the menu.

The only thing that drove me to download the manual from the internet was the usual exasperating question: what do the LEDs on the battery charger mean: charging or charged?*

*(Spoiler alert: green means charging; it goes out when it's charged).

Couple of pics for you with DNGs.

Thanks for the DNGs.  I took a look at the new pancake 18 file to see how strong the distortion correction is.  Capture One, unlike Lightroom, let's you see this in the lens profile screen, and allows adjusting the amount of correction applied.  The barrel distortion is less than, for example is present in the 11 end of the 11-23 TL lens.  The embedded profile doesn't quite remove it all, but what's left is hard to see and can be removed with a slightly stronger correction.  There are those who think software correction is unalloyed evil, so I compared two 100% renderings, with and without this, but the quality of detail at the edge of the frame (the checks in the subject's shirt) is the same either way, and a little bit of color fringing gets corrected with the default setting.  So it seems like a good profile is provided.

I liked the colours from the embedded profile. The only one I am unsure about is the red of my holly berries - it looks a bit on the blue side of red rather than the expected yellow. It's marginal though, and could be correctable by white balance alone. The pink/red brick in the shot with the bee is perfect.

Reds in nature are tricky to reproduce digitally (at least when shot casually). The reds are often clipped and a lot of the detail is lost. Your holly berries are no exception – especially in the second photo.

Another comment: expect to see a number of CLs going for repair to the battery door. It flaps open when you remove the card, you put it down on the table and - snap! (Not mine, yet). Not the greatest design.

The one on the Q has always worried me: ie tilting camera on a surface with door open. So I always remove card and shut the door!
