Half the distance (but in a mirror):

 

focusing in both of these examples was done by moving to maximize the red highlighting in the VF2 viewfinder.  In this case, I focused on the lettering at the edge of the lens.

Prayung mantis. M10-R on a small tripod with APO 35 with max. close-up and cropped to ~1/3 of the total image. If you click on the photo it seems as if you can see the brains through the skin of its head.
