Not sure we want a digitally-simulated shutter sound because that would mean adding a speaker to the M. Maybe Leica could design a simple mechanical device that emulated the shutter sound instead.

And leave away the IBIS as the space would be needed for mechanical shutter. A mechanical shutter just for sound would be a real innovation.

Resistance is futile, and IBIS will assimilate us all. I don't care much either way, but what I don't want is another M with a mechanical shutter as clunky-sounding as the M11.

But what do you win when the M12 has a purely el shutter BUT the shutter to emulate the shutter noise is the shutter of the M11?

No sane engineer at Leica would use the M11 mechanical shutter as a template.

Total and utter bollocks. It is focus aid like any other and quite useful within its limitations as long as the photographer takes the trouble to learn to use it. Obviously it is completely irrelevant for an optical focus system.

It's not very precise...

That depends - it is a contrast system that depends both on the lens and the subject. If implemented badly (Sony!) it is near to useless. I prefer to use it with magnification, which makes it extremely precise.

"M stands for rangefinder" — Leica. If you want an EVF buy an SL. How could you build an M camera with only an EVF/ both built in?

Focus peaking can be very precise if you use longer focal lengths and focus wide open. It does not work well for wide-angles and focusing at small apertures.

How about this - Leica projects a recording of the M3 shutter sound through a directional speaker in place of the RF window and uses it to focus by sonar:

Ausnahme bestätigt die Regel :).

Stefan Daniel's quote: "M stands for rangefinder – and as long as I have something to say about Leica, it will have a range finder. "

MD, MDa and MD-2 had no rangefinder either. No window at all here. Ready to receive a built-in EVF ;).

Well, by my reckoning, Leica still have 20 letters of the alphabet to work with in order to designate a new camera model, so why not an M with an EVF?

Personally, I'll take an M that is also a keychain, wallet, eyeglass holder, and phone. It would simplify my life greatly. 😆

In my country we even have more than 26 letters, so let Leica have a go 😇

Anything over 26 is a waste. 😃

The fewer letters, the more challenging the pronunciation. There would be no spelling bee championships if English had enough letters :).

I sincerely hope I'm wrong but my feeling is that the Messsucher is a dying concept. An M with EVF makes no sense. Autofocus has become a real joy.

There is no shame to prefer AF but M cameras and lenses are manual and will remain so as long as there are people willing to pay for them. As for ""dying concept" i have been hearing this since the seventies and you can see the result half a century later. EVF-M making no sense for you does't mean that it makes no sense for everybody else BTW. This has been discussed at length on this forum.
