  1. The rangefinder mechanism is only about focusing. The OVF is about framing, seeing the details in the shadows, and enjoying the image. EVF's lack of dynamic makes framing often difficult. Your opinion is not reproducible by any observation, experience, or measurement.
  2. IMO, the biggest advantage of the X100 series over Q is the OVF, something M owners appreciate. The IQ difference between APS-C and FF is small. The IQ difference between FF/APS-C/m43 and an iPhone 15 Pro Max is huge.
  3. Yes. I meant that you could have used a mechanical shutter with SL2 and likely SL3 for that bee shot, and you would not have seen the wing deformation.
  4. Because Q3 has a leaf shutter, its fastest mechanical shutter is 1/2000.
  5. Note that SL3 will have a focal plane shutter, allowing 1/8000 with a mechanical shutter.
  6. The only way would be to allow 12-bit mode. Otherwise, it is the same as Sony and Sigma 60MP cameras.

  8. If your Auto-ISO images are noisier than when you shoot with manual ISO, then your Auto-ISO settings are not optimal. Low exposure creates noise, e.g., too small aperture, too fast shutter speed, or too low scene light. Most likely, your Auto-ISO setting specifies too fast shutter speed.
  9. I expect the SL3 sensor's readout time to be the same as a7rIV's: 100ms. If Leica would allow 12-bit mode, the readout would improve to 50ms.
  10. Yes, and is still state of the art, no other sensor has replaced it for ultimate IQ and resolution.
  11. The graphs say that S1R applies in-camera noise reduction at lower ISOs. We do not know the PDR without NR. Also, since ISO values are not normalized, we do not know whether the graphs should be shifted left or right.
  12. We should not mix video and still modes, and in this thread, we are talking about still photography. Still photography, full sensor readout: Z9 has a 3.7ms readout speed. a7sII should have a bit more than 10ms.
  13. Jim has tested only readout time for still photography. Some mirrorless cameras with stacked sensors are now in the less than 5ms range.
  14. Higher-resolution sensors typically have slower readouts than lower-resolution sensors (47MP vs 24MP). P.S.: I also measured about 1/40 sec for SL2 using the quick-and-dirty method.
  15. I assume SL2 has the same readout speed as Q2. Q2's readout speed is 1/26 sec (DPR link). The 60MP sensor used in Sony cameras needs 1/10 sec (Jim Kasson link).

  17. That sounds like a conspiracy theory. Leica's profits will increase if they sell more cameras. Throttling production can only help eBay resellers. Small producers like Leica cannot increase their initial production by much when demand is high, only to reduce it later by a lot when demand tapers off.
  18. Does anybody remember the more recent criticism of Q3, even after the launch? Launched almost a year ago, it is still out of stock everywhere.
  19. It still looks nicer than all other available mirrorless cameras (nothing compares to certain film cameras). Shooting from the hip is difficult if you cannot tilt the LCD. Also, landscape shots with a camera very low to the ground are easier with a tiltable LCD. I only and regularly tilt LCD when shooting on a tripod. Otherwise, I shoot only with EVF. It would be nice if tilting the LCD would disable the eye sensor and enable LV on LCD like it is done with Q3.

  21. I have turned histogram off as blinkies, for me, are enough to set the exposure.
  22. Histogram and highlight clipping warnings are useful to save highlights from clipping or reduce noise in the image. Using histograms or highlight clipping warnings is as simple and fast as adjusting exposure compensation while framing the image. In my book, that is much faster than using a handheld meter to determine exposure.
  23. Yes, that is true. The consequence is that, in most situations, you are wasting a bit of IQ (noise). However, in many cases, histogram and/or highlight clipping will allow a "better" exposure (less noise) than when not using them.
  24. The main reason that ETTR fails for some seems to be that they clip the highlights, which is the ultimate ETTR sin. I believe that most people who use histograms and highlight clipping know that it is, unfortunately, based on JPEGs in most cameras. I do not understand what you wrote.
