No video with M11 - this is expected in 2022, right?

Why do you have higher expectations of the M as a video camera compared to as a still camera? A M is capable of taking both superb photos and video without having the most advanced functionality or use envelope for either. It doesn't have to have all the functionality and tools of a pro videocam, just as the M misses all those other still functionality and tools - and remains highly desirable.

8 bit video is not the same quality as M DNG file. you have 4 stop of DR and nobody finds that sexy. You are better off with iPhone video.

It depends whose looking and what the content is - same as stills. There are plenty of interesting photos taken as jpgs.

Maybe if Leica offered video capabilities that only get unlocked with an additional $500 purchase, like Pana had for v-log, the photo purists could opt out of it. 🤷‍♂️

With Leica opting out of anything would cost you more money.

Imagine an M Leica that can only deliver JPEGs, or a video of the same quality as JPEGs.

I would also be against adding in-camera HDR that generates only JPEGs.

lol that is not why I buy the most expensive camera. I want to deliver quality

And every shot is an exhibition print? Good for you. I’m afraid I take a more pragmatic (amateurish) approach: I use the one camera for travel, social, family, street, eBay sales, record keeping, landscape, photo projects…..and whatever else catches my eye - still and video. Some of these things depend on quality images, some depend on having a tool that helps me to get the shot, others depend on my eye alone, and the rest depend on having a camera I enjoy using.

A M Leica can deliver jpgs if that’s what you want. It’s not something I would choose. But at least you can choose to ignore the option. Video would be the same - a choice that can be ignored by those who don’t want it.

Almost all video is a series of jpgs anyway. I don’t think anyone is asking for CinemaDNG - yet.

As far as I know its a fact that the camera market moves towards video besides improved features for photography. Canon removes its 30mins limitation or overheating problem. They are forced to do that. Leica knows that very well. So its clear to me what will happen sooner or later all by keeping the form factor the same as M11. And I personally cannot imagine that somone who does NOT use video will NOT buy the next M anymore. I never used ALL functions if my M11. I do not reject the M11 because of that.

Imagine that a future Leica App would make it possibele to fully customise your personal M menu. The functions you do not like (or you even hate) you just delete ot of the menu. This would remind me of the Apple FINDER: Just show what you want to see. The rest you just "delete" in the sidebar

I don't like paying for features I won't use.

You know this how?

Educated guess, but if you really use all of the prebuilt jpeg modes, bracketing, all metering and drive modes, flash, visoflex, tethering and countless others then I was wrong, but I doubt it.

Anyhow, my point was video could simply be one of the features in a menu you’d never go to, similarly to one of the above.

Cheers!!!

Considering the level of glitchiness of the M11, perhaps video is matter for M12 😉

In the meantime would be nice to fix;

  • usbc port (charging is a lottery depending on cables, and source, with apparent no logic)
  • visoflex (glitchy to say the least)
  • infra shutter speed B pose (intermediate setting jump to B)
  • zombie lens reader (lives when should be dead)

plus some features:

  • ability to disable touch on the screen and so avoid random live view coming up and other things

so, since many refer to the 'it is a perfect camera for taking picture only' mantra, let's make it perfect once for all

 😉

Except, you know, when Leica was selling tens of thousands of M240-series cameras and proclaiming that a multifunctional, modular M was the future.

Ironically, by virtue of continuous OTS metering and LiveView, the M11 is effectively a video camera from which you are making stills.

Which makes the lack of video much more absurd than the long gone baseplate.

But it really isn’t though. There’s a lot more than just a feed from a sensor to making a camera that does video.

There are plenty of cameras that do great video. The M11 isn’t one of them. So choose something else. I use video occasionally but I’m happy my M’s don’t have the extra complexity of menus, buttons, heat management etc that go into adding video to a camera. I also imagine follow focus with an M, even with the lower res VF2 would be quite challenging.

The SL2 series does a fine job with M lenses and video and has the required focusing aids built in, if that’s what you really need. Even a modern phone does a better job than an M would.

Personally I would like to have  a “moving photograph” option on an M.  But a modern iPhone is just as good for the purpose. Gordon is right. Heat management is a real problem for M cameras. Video only worked with the larger body of the M240. It is not unlikely that it will return with a future model as technology progresses. I think Leica would be smart enough to provide a Luddite UI for those who don’t want or use it.
