plasticman Posted February 6, 2020 Share #141 Posted February 6, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes a lot of people talk about the 3-dimensional effect, I was just surprised by the 'abruptness' of the plane of focus on film. This is the sort of thing I've come to expect with digital, but these modern-looking film images weren't what I was expecting. I'll probably give it more time, as the first couple of rolls were a lot of 'real-life test' type shots - ie: wide open pictures of the kids against busy backgrounds, and so on. Incidentally no trouble focusing the lens whatsoever - I'd ascertained from the T that it was calibrated for ƒ1,5, so had no need to do any acrobatics when it was wide open. Picked-up the Voigtländer and after a dozen test shots on the T I can see it does indeed have a more 'painterly' rendering - which is maybe what I expected from the Sonnar. Advertisement Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 Hi plasticman, Take a look here Zeiss C Sonnar 50/1.5 Images. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted February 6, 2020 Share #142 Posted February 6, 2020 Typical Zeiss behavior i suspect. All Zeiss lenses i've got had less DoF in the background compared to Leica ones. At least Mandler's since Karbe's seem to have less DoF behind the subject matter too. To a lesser extent than my Zeiss lenses though.

To a lesser extent than my Zeiss lenses though. I think you've diagnosed the problem for me. All my Leica lenses are or have been Mandler designs. They behave differently it appears. I still like what the Sonnar is doing (I think). Maybe it's just a bit unexpected for me going by the discussions of an older formula that I've apparently misunderstood. plasticman Posted February 7, 2020 Share #144 Posted February 7, 2020 I was looking again at the tests I did with the lens on the digital camera (T) and here I actually like the result a bit more. I still think the color-results from the lens on film are more beautiful, but the gentle detail-rendering compared to other lenses on digital softens the sharp plane of focus. I don't know whether this makes any sense to anyone else(?) but the short story is I'm liking the character of the lens a bit more. Generally I think I prefer the rendering and angle-of-view of the Voigtländer 40 a bit more, but the color and detail from the Zeiss is vastly superior. farnz Posted February 7, 2020 Share #145 Posted February 7, 2020 Hi Mani, For me it's a bit more straightforward because I prefer the way the Sonnar design draws compared to Double Gauss, Cooke Triplet, Tessar, Trioplan, Ernostar etc designs. YMMV. 🙂 Pete.
bags27 Posted February 29, 2020 Share #146 Posted February 29, 2020 (edited) On a slightly different subject, I posted this on another, more technical thread about this lens, but thought it might be helpful here as well. Regarding the question of pre-set focusing, Zeiss answered me this way: Out of factory, the C-Sonnar T* 1,5/50 ZM always comes in an adjustment to be the best compromize regarding its focus shift. On a camera with a perfectly calibrated rangefinder, the C-Sonnar will give you a slight front focus at f/1.5, spot-on focusing at f/2, and a slight backfocus at f/2.8. Please do your own tests with your camera to get used to the behaviour of this special lens On special request, we can offer an individual adjustment of this lens. It is not possible to know by the serial number if a certain lens had been adjusted individually to a certain camera body. Keith (M) Posted March 17, 2020 Share #148 Posted March 17, 2020 My C-Sonnar usually resides on my M7 but I recently had to press into service on my M10M as a substitute for my 50mm Summilux-M ASPH (which was away for repair). The C-Sonnar seems to suit the M10M very well indeed. Click to view in LightBox. Welcome, dear visitor! Thanks very much Keith - Hauser+Wirth is a great place, whatever they're showing. The Zeiss on the M10M seems a marvellous combination - can't wait for all this Coronavirus crisis to be over so I can get out and use mine. Your pic of the extractor hood and the bearded cook is particularly good, bravo.
