There's something odd going on with one of the 'bokeh balls' in the final picture ("Signing in") where a bokeh ball has intruded in front of the top of her nose whereas the rest look to be much further back.  Optical illusion?

Pete.

Yes, I could never quite work out how that happened. I've never seen this in any other photo I've taken, nor indeed in any taken by others.

What was the shutter time? Wild theory: the bokeh ball needs shorter exposure to be seen as it is shown on the image. If she moves a little forward during an exposure of let’s say at 1/60, her movement is slowly enough to not get movement blur, but then the ball is already registered at say 1/250 within the 1/60. And her nose is then overlighted

Is the bokeh and rendering of this lens really different from other lenses?

It has the classic Sonnar rendering and bokeh but with colours and sharpness enhanced by modern manufacturing techniques and coatings.

If you mean "Is the bokeh and rendering of this lens really different from all other lenses?" then possibly not but it certainly is different from some other lens designs, for example, Anastigmat, Double Gauss, Ernostar, Biotar, Triotar, Biogon, Tessar, and Planar lens designs.  Also different from earlier Sonnar lenses.

I put this down to an old lens design full of aberrations, combined with modern, contrasty coatings. My 35 f/1.4 Nokton C/V does something similar (and comes from the same factory ;) ).

Here's the only example I have at the moment (other pictures where I saw it were not saved, for other creative reasons).

Basically, you get a hard-edged, bright-ring "bokeh-ball" in the background, that eats into an edge in the foreground. In this case the background spotlights through the fuzzy building column (top right). The intense light burns through the more neutral foreground edge.

Trying out the sonnar 50 1.5:

Mine arrive calibrated at 1.5, so I have to adjust for back focus when shooting anything above 1.5.

Did it come that way, or did you have it calibrated like that after purchase?

Greg

It came that way. I just have to adjust focus when using lower apertures. Hence, when the image in the RF patch match, I just have to twist the focusing tab a little clockwise to compensate in higher apertures

Stephen, well, looking at this performance, then I prefer the lens calibrated at f:1.5 !

When calibrated as such, is the lens in focus at say 2 and 5 meteres and f:1.5 too?
