35mm 1.4 Summilux pre-asph

Dear all,

 

is there any significant difference between the versions of 35Lux pre-asph in terms of so called 'Leica Glow', or image rendering. Some suggest German version is better, others say earlier versions produce better glow and distinctive rendering. I would like to hear the opinion of the people who own, or use(d) these versions. Which version do you recommend?

 

 

Dear Metin, 

I don't believe in any noticeable difference inbetween the Canadian or German manufacture origin of the 35 pre asph Summilux v2. There might be more sample to sample differences as these lenses aren't recent . 

Older lenses might show more "glow" and  this is quite subjective !

The only difference i've noticed was some reduced flare out of my "German" v2 copy from 1989, compared to a "Canadian" v1 i don't recall the vintage, but i found the same "glow" i.e. halos around highlights out of both versions.

I really like mine (infinity lock)- it just feels so good- it's a jewel.

It was a rainy and windy day

 

Exactly as today, where the public bins filled with umbrellas

reminded me of this shot.

 

Nothing fancy photographywise, just loved the flashy colors

in the rather dull environment.

 

The glow discussed in previous posts can greatly be tamed

by exposing for the highlights.

Dear friends,

I can't decide between Lux 35 Pre- Ash and Lux 50mm Pre Asph. I am aware they are different focal lengths.. I like the bokeh and OOF of the Lux50, but, I love the glow of the Lux35. I also have Lux50 Asph version! I like the rendering of the pre asph version. And Lux 35 has also a wider field of view so I can use it for environmental portraits. Which one of them you would choose if you have only one option? I know it is a hard question but I need your help before deciding...

If you already own a 50mm Lux ASPH, and if you also love using the 35mm lenses, I would get the 35/1.4 Lux pre-ASPH.  It is a very special lens overall and use it extensively.

At f/1.4 and f/2 (mainly 1.4), my 35/1.4 v2 shows halos (aka "glow") around highlights that my 50/1.4 v3 does not and the latter is sharper there, but both are soft at edges and corners anyway.
At f/2.8 and on, 35/1.4 v2 and 50/1.4 v3 have a similar rendition.
35/1.4 v2 flares more than 50/1.4 v3 though generally.
Othewise only you can know if you prefer the 35mm or 50mm field of view.

Only you can decide which focal length you want. It is an impossible question for anyone else to answer.

You already have a very good 50mm lens so there doesn't seem much point in buying another.

I would go for the 35 pre asph. As Raid says, it's a very special lens.

I don't think you'll regret it- and one of the great things about vintage Leica lenses- is that in a sense you can own them for free- or even get paid to own them. If you look around and bide your time till you find a good price- chances are years later it can be sold for more, oftentimes a lot more. I think virtually every single Leica lens I own I could sell today for more than I paid for it. If I did that- essentially I've been paid to own and use them for years! Only problem is I can rarely ever bring myself to sell any...

The Oufro on the Summilux produces some pretty amazing and weird dreamy photos- the DOF is so shallow it practically doesn't exist. But the out of focus areas are really nice IMO. That was just some rather mundane flowers in a vase- but with Oufro became something else altogether.
