CL with 280mm f/2.8 APO-Telyt-R + APO-Extender-R 1.4X . . . cropped at about 40%, shot at MFD, which is considerably longer than its f/4 sibling.

The more I use my R APO telephotos on the CL, the more I get reminded that, good as they may be, they were made for film, not digital.

What prompted that thought yesterday was that in bright sunlight at more than 50% magnification, blooming highlights were obvious and had to be pulled strongly.  That and image texture in moderate to low light are the most striking differences between the 280 APO and the 300mm PF non-Leica  lens I often use.

The older lenses seem to be at their best in bright overcast outdoor conditions, where detail and color are spectacular.

I see. Yes, the Nikkor 300mm f4 PF is a fine, small, low-weight and reasonably priced (short) tele. Works very well with the 1.4 extender. You know it, but others may not, so a tip... Would be fantastic to have such - or similar - lens in L-mount...
