Almost bought the M10 yesterday, however.......

I'm perfectly ready to be critical of Leica when I feel it's justified, but the EVF is not an issue.  It's a perfectly useable occasional accessory.

Just as the SL is less well adapted to M lenses that the M10 is, so the M10 is less well adapted to EVF photography than the SL is. Two excellent and fairly specialist cameras with different specialisms. Our choice.

I am genuinely surprised that anyone is surprised about this.

Accepted. I had considered buying the SL, but fundamentally I'm wedded to the M for many reasons, some out of pure nostalgia, and others for good reason not least of all my not insubstantial stable of M glass. That being said, it cannot be beyond the wit of Leica to produce a high quality external EVF for the M for those of us poor souls who through age and visual decrepitude require a little assistance from time to time.

Understood, but do you really find the EVF inadequate though? I don't.

And I wonder whether a large part of the rationale for the SL would evaporate if the M10 offered both the same quality EVF and a (literally) infinitely better optical VF than the SL in the same package. And what would the demands on the battery be? What would the size of the EVF need to be? What effect would those things have on the feel and usability and overall appeal of the M10?

Despite their specialisms, all cameras are compromises and I feel Leica have got this about right.

An EVF with same  quality as the SL it would be huge and many would complain why Leica put such an huge EVF on a reasonably small body...

As many already commented the M10 is a RF camera, the EVF is more than adequate being an accessory. And the VF of the M10 is beautiful to look through :-)

PS: it's so nice to have many options...M...S...SL...and...

If SL gives you what you want, then M is not for you. Me? If I wanted a superior AF camera with great lenses with portability, then I'd just get the Sony (or wait for the next A7r) and call it a day.

I think you should only consider the M10 of you want the RF experience.

I bought one and have no buyer's remorse.

Just enjoy the SL and don't look back or around.

Tried the M10 at my local dealer yesterday and just could not pull the trigger after having used the SL for the past 4 months. To my surprise, the accessory Visoflex was nowhere near the quality of the SL EVF, in fact it was like looking into a tunnel. The OVF RF of the M10 seemed moderately improved over my MM1, but again, with the beautifully large and crisp VF of the SL offering real-time visual feedback of the image attributes (exposure.DOF etc). Dare I say, it seemed like taking a huge step backwards! Until Leica are able to add an accessory EVF, or better yet, integrated EVF, of the same quality or better than the SL, I'm not sure I can return to the M.

All this to say, are there others whose M sit idle since using the SL, or have decided not to purchase any other M bodies until a better EVF experience is available?

If the rangefinder isn't for you, you SHOULDN'T be returning to the M system. That seems fairly straight forward to me. I have a feeling there are more in my boat that would abandon the M if they went to any viewing system other than the mechanical rangefinder. That's what the M system is all about and what makes it different.

That's why they introduced the SL.....for those like you. That's where you should be staying.

Or throw a mental switch and return to the OVF/RF.

My EVF is on the camera pretty much 100% of the time these days.  I think there is a fundamental disconnect here though for those desirous of SL level quality.  The EVF on the M is best thought of as an accessory finder, not a primary one.   Its perfect for checking framing, exposure and to some extent focus.  As I recall reading, and Jaap has alluded to,  the designers considered a higher quality implementation, but both the size and battery consumption made it a non-starter.
