what makes you think there’s something wrong with the lenses I have now? Can’t I have more than one lens? 🤷🏻‍♂️

You should be able to take excellent photos with your existing lens on your M10R. Your current lens is more than good enough.

My current lens IS more than good enough. I never said I wanted to replace the lens I have now.

I said I could use the money to buy lenses. I never said I wanted to replace my lens.

I don’t need a new body. The body you have now is more than good enough.

if you need more than one body then that’s another argument.

you’re making a false comparison.

Lenses are a way better investment than getting into a new body that won’t make any difference.

You’re saying if my lens was a 50mm cheap fuzzy $100 lens and I suddenly had money to buy a Leica 50mm APO, that this is the same as changing from an M10R to an M11.

you’re saying it’ll make the same difference in my photos. 😅

don’t miss the clown car 🤡

Arguing with clowns on the internet is frustrating isn't it?

I'd love to get back into the M system (having a wide range of reasonably modern M lenses, for weight and image aesthetic reasons),  but I struggled with the M system because, as someone who wears glasses, I found it hard to focus, hard to frame accurately (particularly at 28mm and beyond, and with the subject outside the centre of the frame).  That may be less of a consideration at lower resolutions, but at 24Mpx and beyond, it matters.  I'm not persuaded that lenses other perhaps than the recent unobtainable 35mm APO Summicron are able to take full advantage of sensors of higher resolution than 24Mpx (at least in the centre).

This is a pity.  I love the Leica lenses for their size, but they work better for me on the SL system, despite their edge limitations.  However, the SL lenses are playing a league or two ahead, gaining also AF, at the expense of bulk.  Result: more keepers with less effort, I'm afraid.

Yea basically everything you just said here.

I love my M, but I would never recommend it to anyone. If anyone asked me I would tell them to go buy a Fuji; they have fun retro cameras and small good lenses. Done.

people who shoot rangefinders don’t need to ask if they should buy one.

for most people, a mirrorless camera is really where is at, and for Leica I think you probably represent most pro users. A lot of them don’t fiddle with rangefinders. They use an SL, but like you, wouldn’t it be interesting to have a small M to add to your kit? Enter the M11. Something that won’t be as jarring to add to an SL kit; but there’s the thing about it being a rangefinder.

I hope that it stays a rangefinder and they don’t kill it and make it another mirrorless  camera. Because honestly, Fuji cameras are already there and you can adapt manual lenses and the results are very good already. An M is not competing with anyone.

That being said, I think the SL may be a bit too big? Panasonic has a habit of making cameras way bigger than they need to be. Maybe the solution is to make the SL a more manageable system in terms of size and leave the M a rangefinder.

I am very happy with the results I get using M-series lenses on the M9, M9M, SL (601).  A camera provides a capability but the most important question (for me) is results.  Does the camera enable me to get the results I am looking for?  At present I don't feel limited by the cameras I use, especially as I have rediscovered the joy of shooting film after a decade with various digital cameras.

What I find interesting about the M11 is what it says about Leica's approach to engineering.  There is a degree of consistency going all the way back to the M3 (also, in design terms, with the SL-series) but there is a difference as well.  I still get good results from my 1958 M2 and 1960 M3 (not to mention 1990s R-series cameras):  a testament to just how well-engineered they are.  My 2011 M9 and 2014 M9M are still working well (with sensors replaced in 2019) but they are now one or two (digital) generations out of date and I would be hard-pressed to imagine someone still using them in 2071.  If I were making a good living from digital photography, the case for an upgrade to the latest model would be strong but otherwise there is a certain pleasure in keeping older kit going for as long as possible.

The other thing that is fascinating about the M11 is just how much heat it has generated in the discussions elsewhere on this forum.  People seem to get very hot under the collar when discussing the features of the latest model M.  This is certainly very interesting for what it says about the way that technology develops.  Is it about marketing, or something else?

Handled the Leica M11 black today in BKK. My Thai friend has just bought it. I do not care about it’s finish, but it’s substantially lighter than my M10-r. Super comfortable with my Konica 35 uc. But the weight advantage of the camera is not enough for me to swap my 10-r for the new m11.

most of them talk about the looks, price, and don't even have it.

There are many small implementation in the M11, it is a great camera. At first look not so much different from M10R in image quality, it was already so good. Handling the camera has gotten better with the new shutter and EVF.

Quick poll right after the announcement:

Are you planning to buy the new Leica M11?

And:

What would most appeal to you about the Leica M11?

Looking forward to your comments!

Andreas

No thank you M11, but I love M mount lenses so I would be interested in M mount body with EVF and IBIS photos only no video. Meantime my SL2-S serves me well in this department.

How would your speculative M differ from the great SL2-S?

I would get away with rangefinder mechanisms and install EVF and an IBIS no video. Given that rangefinder mechanisms costs about 1k EUR by estimate, electronic components are cheep, cost wise body like this should cost just a bit less then M11. This setup would be smaller and liter then my SL2-S (not that is bathers me too much) for travel and walkaroun use. I know it will never happen taught.

So, it would be the same as SL2-S,  just a bit smaller,  a bit lighter, a bit cheaper, but would not support the great L-mount lenses, and will not have AF? If such an M would be on the market, I would buy SL2-S instead. :)

Just make the SL-Lite with the L mount and 60 mpx, made of a light alloy or carbon, sell it with the M adapter and it will be an answer to many requests. I will be happy with the EVF from the new Visoflex 2.
I handled the black M11 on Saturday and it feels very light and balanced in the hand. I believe that an Sl can be made very light.
