'Leica' Gearing tripod

This popped up on my FB feed as a 'Leica Gearing Tripod', but it appears to be a third party product, endorsed (?) rebadged (?) by Leica. And 'Gearing' seems to be the name of the manufacturer, not a description of how it works.

But it's definitely Leica prices!

It appears to be £100 cheaper from Leica than on Gearing's own website! Unheard of!

I watched a review on YouTube about this tripod and there seems to be a few awkward flaws with it, not to mention the amount of components that can be misplaced. I have a feeling it's for the gimmick guy and once owned for a day most of its functions will never be used again.

I love niche products like this.....a tripod ready for 'those quick on-the-go shots' and the option of converting it to trekking poles (I see a potential flaw in the logic, here though).

Sorry, chaps.  Back to the drawing board.....

No, it's linked to the Leica UK website.

They seem to have all kinds of third party tat on their store site, some with Leica branding, the sort of things that are sold to bored passengers in 'luxury' duty free shops at the airport. I hope you are all listening to the Music Right Now selections with these £400 headphones:

https://store.leica-camera.com/uk/en/over-ear-headphone-master-dynamic-for-0.95-mh40s-95

But don't just chuck them on the sofa afterwards like a teenager, hang them up in style on this £60 hook:

https://store.leica-camera.com/uk/en/headphone-stand-master-dynamic-for-0.95-mp1000b-95

What better to keep your keys safe than a £22 bit of string and leather?:

https://store.leica-camera.com/uk/en/rope-key-chain-created-by-cooph-red

...except this £175 key ring, of course:

https://store.leica-camera.com/uk/en/leica-zegna-keyring-leica-red

For Christmas, give the gift of a £57 Santa Soft Release:

https://store.leica-camera.com/uk/en/soft-release-button-santa

These £530 sunglasses are probably what Joe Biden would wear if he was into Leica:

https://store.leica-camera.com/uk/en/mykita-leica-sunglasses-ml05-matte-silver-lens-g15-solid-red-edges

This £450 rope strap is allegedly regarded as 'a bit pricey' even by Thorsten Overgaard:

https://store.leica-camera.com/uk/en/leica-zegna-carrying-strap-loden

And what better to go shopping with than this £340 'baby blue' tote bag with a special compartment to make your Q2 easy to steal?:

Perhaps you carry the third leg on a strap diagonally across your back, like a sword in a Samurai movie?

This is actually a tripod for people who don't use tripods,........ but feel they haven't got all the kit without one, or a selfie stick, or a walking pole.

Anybody familiar with the hilarious novel 'Scoop' by Evelyn Waugh will wonder why Gearing didn't also include a cleft stick with which a runner could deliver messages.

I think the third leg is to make up a juggling set  for the owner to relieve their boredom between 'those quick on-the-go shots'

The QR camera to tripod head system seems to be a bit of reinventing a wheel that has already been reinvented far better by Arca. Who would want such a bulky lump stuck under their camera? A classic case of running before you can walk I would say. Pity. They could simply have built a very high quality tripod instead of confusing gimicry with innovation.

Agreed, Arca and Manfrotto have perfectly designed QR plates that are unobtrusive on the camera and can be left on all day every day. You can't even poach a 50/50 ditherer to switch by having an entirely bonkers impediment under the camera.

The rest of the stuff  linked to by @Anbaric in post #6 is at least equally bizarre.

It seems to me that the Leica brand has been hijacked by their own merch dept who must be on acid if they think any of this stuff is going to enhance the brand image.

I expect to see this in the Leica shop in a few weeks time. Or perhaps the quoted slump in diamond prices means they won't bother.

It might make the world's most expensive lens element. Coming soon, the 50mm f/0.75 Glowing Diamond Lens made from pure carbon; carbon fibre mechanicals and diamone elements. A one off. Supplied in an understated black, recyclable cardboard box.

To be serious about the Gearing Tripod, I would have thought that there is a market for a simple but very well made tripod made by a company which is used to working to excating aircraft tolerances. They just need to back off and be less ambitious and produce a very effective product which uses the best features currently found to be effective.

Hello Paul,

A very good idea.

And let's give it a catchy name like a Leitz/Leica 14100.

Best Regards,

Michael

But their nearest target in high quality would be Gitzo, but they rightly never went down the gimmick path. As a landscape photographer I can't imagine my screams of anguish in turning my walking pole into a tripod everytime the light changes, or deciding that I needed a 'selfie' while doing it. The worst thing a photographer can do is confuse ability with intent, so just like you can carry two cameras, maybe one for colour and one for B&W, it doesn't mean it's a good idea. Neither does walking up a hill with a walking pole, or is it a tripod, you are just compounding indecision, leaving the house with a plan and simple kit is far better.
