It would almost certainly not be the M10 R sensor, because: 1. It would not make any sense to have both 40 and 47mp versions of the same camera. 2. The M10R and S3 sensors are not designed for full time live view/EVF like the SL2. At least from what I heard, they are not interchangeable. I had asked a contact at Leica about why they did not use the SL2 sensor in the S3, and that was their answer. The Q and SL share sensors and the M and S share sensors.

As for what it is? I have no idea. 24mp "speed/sensitivity" version would make some sense to me, but the SL2 already does those things very well compared to cameras even a few years old, so it seems like a bit niche to me. The SL2 already does quite well at 6400 or even higher, and how often do people practically need to go much above that?

Isn’t that the M10-R ?
AF tech is essentially free. Just a bunch of algorithms. Don’t use AF lens and voilà.

NB : video capabilities are also free.

Goodness me after the debacle with my M240 never will I buy another M again.

Perhaps I'am bored with the lock down and feel a little adventures with suggesting for an all manual focus SL2,  true it's not practical.

So It's best to hang on to my money  and just keep using what I got, after all it's more then adequate for me needs.

Thank you for convincing me not to waste any more money on Leica equipment.

It would make more sense to use the S5 body footprint - and hopefully all the firmware enhancements too

Fingers crossed for a 24mp camera the size of the Panasonic S5, with killer competitive autofocus and burst rate. But this change in body size would a big departure from the SL2, so it would make sense if the model name was someting else entirely, like SL-C. Not SL2-S'. So I'm betting it's a SL2 with another sensor or something.

thought that the S5 used the same sensor as the Sigma fp, which is BSI (and presumably sourced from Sony).

I checked, you’re right S1 S1H S5 must be using a variant of Sony 24MP BSI without phase detect.
However 47MP is supposedly build by TowerJazz and it is not a BSI. Just a very optimised FSI one.

Off topic but what is that adapter/tripod foot?

It is Leica R-Adapter-L with its very nice and sturdy tool-less removable tripod foot.

Back to topic. In any case SL2-S with IBIS + S5 sensor : 24MP, BSI, no phase detect & dual gain ISO ; will be a significant upgrade from original SL

I am going to continue to be off topic 🙂 a little more. I hadn’t seen that the adapter came with a foot, does anyone know if the foot also fits the Leica S to L adapter?

Not to mention modern day video specs.

Is it possible this is a camera targeted squarely at hybrid video shooters?

A lower res, dual ISO and lower priced entry into the SL system.

The S to L adapter includes the same style of foot. I am not sure if they are identical, but if you have lost yours for the s to l adapter, you might be able to source it from the Leica parts department.

Having both adapters, I can confirm that the foot fits both adapters.

I don’t think so.
Leica did not have the budget to build hundreds of different body.

Same SL2 name suggest that the body is identical. But the inside will be different. Just like the whole M10 series : same body. Different internal with some minor cosmetic changes.

S5 is smaller than S1, but it is not a small camera like A7C. So I don’t think that Leica will even bother.

What could be impressive is a reboot of CL line up. For example a CL2 being a very compact full frame mirrorless. Just add a compact Summicron-SL or Elmarit-SL 40mm to the mix. And we can get a real reborn of original CL.

I guess that such thing will never happen. 😅

I hope the S stands for finally working GPS.

The camera is almost 1year old they still don’t have a robust geotagging function for the camera. Even on the latest Fotos v2.2.1 app, there is no mention of geotagging which implies it’s still in ‘beta’ mode (aka. unusable.).

As someone who works in the tech sector, one of the most annoying thing I find is companies shipping ‘beta’ half-baked features that don’t work properly. It’s their engineer’s job to make it work and if they can’t ship a proper feature, they need to find some better engineers or they don’t deserve paying customers. Paying customers are not beta testers and don’t work for the company. To ship beta software is to imply that a customer can deal with the annoyances and troubles that engineers get paid to deal with.

I heard about the 007 version too. Any idea how it will look ? I’m imagining it navy blue, stealth, and extremely cool.

when shall we expect these three announcements ?

Sorry to disappoint you but it’s regular black just with British Racing Green leather, a rather naff “gun barrel” logo lens cap and a little green Globetrotter case...
