Keep in mind that these last few photos were shot with the Lecia SL1. This one below was shot with the 90mm Summicron-SL on the SL1:

I personally don't see it as being at all overly sharpened. On the point about hyper-real separation, I've had a think about it and I'm not sure I share the sentiment. This sort of rendering of the Summicron-SL works at least for me.

This portrait below, however, was shot with the 75mm Summicron-SL on the Leica SL2 wide open. Again I don't see the oversharpening or the hyper-real separation (maybe little to separate here!):

Once again, it renders (to my eyes) very pleasantly. A very minor issue is the failure of the APO at the top of the hair.

All very subjective of course!

thanks so very much for that. Mistaking the camera, I drew the wrong conclusion about the sensor/processor combination. But it still shows, I believe, that the more refined the tool, the greater the chances of a certain "look" that some, at least, find extreme and unpleasant. Again, it's about getting to know the equipment, determining what is pleasing to the photographer, and producing more of that than of what is unpleasing.

As to the accordion player, I don't think it's oversharpened in the camera. As I wrote on that thread, it's probably a product of the subject's isolation (and perhaps the way the light falls on his hair). But to me, it is definitely an odd look.

It's the rim lighting and the strap around his shoulder that make him stick out. I'm not sure it's the sensor or the lens. In another shot (see below), the separation isn't so prominent. The multi-layering in the photo is handled really well (to my eyes) by this camera/lens combo:

I agree. This is a very fine photograph! To some extent, I think, it's the very nature of the subject that carries this off, which here is the serious, engaged look of the 2 women. There's a story to be told here, and the isolation seems appropriate and helpful.

Oversharpened in the camera? Or is the picture textured by the sand and concrete which makes up most of the surfaces seen?  Click thru (twice now) to see the full rendered version.

Oh, BTW, this was taken with an M 24 Elmarit asph on an M10-D, not an SL or SL2.

Here's a shot of the 50mm Summilux-SL I shot wide open on the same day with a similar level of separation:

Separation of the subject from the foreground and background is an aesthetic choice.  Some people like it, some don't. Sometimes it enhances an image, sometimes it detracts. There is no hard and fast rule.
