but the thing is I've seen plenty of M11 users who say they have no problems but actually the battery pull out becomes such a normal weekly occurrence

How much? Numbers please. I am in the Leica business for over 20 years but in my surrounding there are only two I have steady contact to. No one of them has freezes.

I bought M11 at Introduction brand new, it freeze occasionally. I bought m11m at introduction brand new. It freeze occasionally, a little less I feel. Now, I plan to buy m11p knowing every M11 actually having this issue actually. It just a matter of how you use it make it show up. That is really my feel.
no, I don’t think I use it wrong. It is an annoy problem but m11 is still my favorite M over all until m12.

Knock-on-wood: trouble free since March 1 ... :)

  • M11-P Silver
  • Firmware v2.0.1
  • SD-card: Sony Tough G 64GB
    • Formatted with SD Card Formater
    • Images stored on SD-card
    • Images transfered via SD-reader (Lexar)
    • Images deleted from SD-card in camera
  • Marker coded M-mount lenses (Leica, Voigtländer)
  • R-mount lenses using R-adapter M
  • Visoflex-2 for R-lenses
  • C'est Ça !

One month into my M11-P and guess what ?

Still no corruption, no freezes: just happily shooting away (while it lasts ... 🤞).

Admittedly, I don't use Burst mode, I don't use Leica Fotos, I don't use Touch-screen.

Just simple plain use of my M and for more 'hightech' stuff I'm using my GFX100ii.

BTW the box reads 20231107.

Happy Easter !

Sad state of affairs for new post pandemic Leica. What are the odds TWO random brand new 50 and 35 summilux very expensive Leica lenses are faulty.

This was the third and last attempted to purchase a new 50 Lux, and the second time a 35 Lux over the last two years. None were perfect. There was always an issue somewhere. Even an APO 50mm in December 2022... de-centred optic that didn't reach sharp infinity focus until f/4. I've completely given up with new Leica gear and would never purchase from a dealer without a solid return policy.

I guess that’s the reason why Leica removed the baseplate, to facilitate a quicker battery pull. It is meant to be.

Yeah, the fact that Leica previously removed the continues mode on the power switch is a hint that this mode is not recommended to use😂

I got mine three weeks ago. I used it during one event on which I shot over 1k images without any issues. I hope it remains that way. I don't want to jinx it. Weather was mild, so heating was not really a possibility.

I used a Kingston Canvas React Pro card (300 MB/s speed), shooting RAW to the memory card and JPEG to the internal drive. I mostly used single shot mode, but occasionally used continuous high mode. Camera behave great during the event.

Firmware version is the latest one, v2.0.2

Just an update--3K shots in now, and no issues whatsoever with new M11P on 2.0.2 (except I have to remember to turn off the darn NR for when I inadvertently take a shot with the lens cap on).

I've now regularly dumped SD cards to Mac OS and Windows, and I'm currently using a Lexar 64GB 300 mb/s card for main shots, as well as the internal storage. I always format the SD card in camera (not erase) whenever it goes into the camera.

I've now hooked the camera directly up to Windows to get images off internal memory (only used the SD card reader on my Macs so far): no issues. I've only lightly used the import from camera / tether into C1, because that's not my normal workflow, but it seems to work.

Next to try: wifi and FOTOS, if only for the remote control. But it's a nice-to-have and I'll reset things right away if this messes with performance. (I suspect if there's a freezing issue I might encounter it here, because even my Macbook Pro doesn't remember my hidden wifi network. Ideally it would just "not connect" as a worst case, but we'll see).

{snipped}

I've since bought the 35 Nokton. Also flawless. I've been really wanting to get a Leica 35 and have my Leica pair, but I've been watching the new lenses coming out and I can't believe what I'm seeing. So I've decided to stick to my Nokton and maybe buy an old like new if I can find one. They're not cheap, but the character and build quality is just something that Leica isn't interested in making anymore unfortunately. The reissue of the 28 Summaron has been solid, but I've heard plenty of QC problems with the Steel Rim.

{snipped}

As a perhaps-helpful data point, in the last year I purchased the 35 Steel Rim re-issue and a new 50 Summicron (with the camera). Both are "perfect" as far as I can tell (and I also picked up a used 35 Cron ASPH, which works nicely on the M11. I was really sort of worried about that one--it's uncoded so pre-M8 production--but I'm actually loving it on the camera, and coding it in-camera seems to work well).

Off-topic FWIW: the most annoying thing about the 35 SR re-issue is that the Leica lens cap doesn't fit any of the Leica-supplied hoods, and that lens is prone to flare. AFAIK, it's the only lens from Leica where the cap doesn't work with the hood on the lens (I need to research a third party solution, I guess).

I've only shot the lens cap once in the last year.  It was painful enough to remember not to do that again.

I've not suffered a hang or corrupted file (yet?).  Unlike you I've never formatted my card in camera.  I've used both XC I and XC II cards from SanDisk, but only 64 GB cards.  I use both coded and uncoded lens.

Never ever use “A” mode. I always choose the shutter myself, so lens cap on or off doesn’t matter to me

Yeah--the lens cap "non-issue" (it's working by design) has nothing to do with "A" mode.

If you have NR turned on and take a shot with the lens cap on, the M11 will make a dark frame reduction shot to reduce noise because it's assuming you're taking a super-dark (night sky) shot. The resulting correction can take a "long" time (over a minute sometimes).
This is very useful for astrophotography; not so much for my general use :)

NR seems to be turned on by default, so I often wonder if this is the cause of at least some of the reports of the camera "hanging" on the first shot :)

Excerpt of the M11 Instruction manual:
« A camera lens can have the effect of a magnifying glass when exposed to direct frontal sunlight. The camera must therefore be protected against extended exposure to direct sunlight.
« Attaching the lens cap and keeping the camera in the shade or ideally in its camera case, will help prevent damage to the interior of the camera. »

Either the camera is in my bag or it's ready to shoot and hanging around my neck. Why a cap?
