The fact that Leica is expanding their line-up should be celebrated. And this particular camera is the perfect tool for me personally, as I:

  • shoot predominantly black&white
  • am often exposed to the elements
  • use the 21-35mm range, and 28mm is the sweet spot in which I'm at my most creative
  • will use the video function, and the quality of video was excellent on the Q2 despite possible limitations
  • will not worry about the sensor or if I took the right lens or filters
  • actually enjoy the constraints of the camera

So I have to thank the team for offering such a product. I think this camera will be successful, and I'm actually glad that more people will try working in mono and hopefully change the perception of black&white photography as being less creative and modern than colour.

Amen to that!  It's reason to cheer, not moan.

Are DNG files available anywhere that I can download and play with?

https://www.dpreview.com/samples/5323005437/leica-q2-monochrom-sample-gallery
I found a RAW download URL on THIS page and the slide right afterwards shows a JPEG of shadow detail available in post.

My Q2M arrived from B&H - phenomenal camera! I've had the original Q since its release; love the Q2 design and of course the B&W files are a pleasure to work with.

However, I'm having an issue with the aperture setting not lining up with the aperture markers on the dial. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. f5.6 and below seem to work consistently fine, but when set to f8 the actual aperture is sometimes f9; f11 is sometimes f13.

Has this ever happened on a Q before? I'm hoping this is a software bug that can be fixed with FW and not a mechanical problem requiring warranty repair.

I emailed Leica USA so they can track the issue and give guidance on resolution.

I hope they Remedy  the situation  quickly..  I performed the same test    so far so good..  but than you  for  bringing this  to our Attention.

This Is where buying directly from a Leica store comes in handy.  I would never consider otherwise.  (And No, I have nothing do with Leica Besides being a huge loyalist). When you spend this kind of money it’s nice to deal with people who only do Leica.  As for your problem...most likely a firmware glitch and will be resolved in the next update.  You can also try reinstalling the current firmware to see if it pushes the bug out somehow.  Nonetheless, you most likely won’t have the problem for long. Good Luck.

This is definitely not a firmware bug but a mechanical fault with the aperture ring. You can feel the ring skip, and it's not as firmly built. This in turn informs the firmware that the ring was turned when indeed it was not and vice-versa. I've come across this on the Q2M and have sent it for a replacement, and I have something to compare to (the Q2).

I purchased my original Q from the local Leica store, but since I was buying online due to the pandemic I often use B&H, which is also great.

Unfortunately, I think it's a mechanical issue. I also reached out to B&H about an exchange and assisting with the warranty. I've not heard back from Leica or B&H but it's Thanksgiving week here.

Don't think I'm in a queue per se. Ought to be getting mine delivered well before January. Leica UK still quoting a seemingly 'usual' 2-5 business days. Can't think why, they've not been moving boxes since they 'launched' the Q2M simultaneously with the imposition of our own UK lockdown #2. Unfortunate timing. Also Black Friday/Monday & Covid-19 will corrupt logistics no doubt. Now waitin' on a tracking number from UPS Express.

I picked mine up from Leica DC one week ago today.  Put it through its paces over the long weekend and I have to say its an amazing camera.  The one thing that kind of surprised me however is how little contrast the dng files have when imported into lightroom or photoshop.  I stopped in the Leica store in DC and chatted with one of the guys in there and apparently its typical for Leica monochrom raw files to have very little contrast until edited.  That being said, I would like to hear about what types of editing techniques you all use to make these pictures pop so to speak.  I am used to my converted Q files having dramatic contrast with very little post processing.  Admittedly, I am more into taking the pictures and no so much into the editing part...Thanks in advance!

Contrast ..the stuff between fully black and fully white pixels? Elsewhere on the forum is a link to a test facility where the Q2M came out quite well in regards the dynamic range. There's zero latitude once a pixel is fully white ...it's gone. Two things to take away - 1) you wouldn't want your Q2M typically to overblow the white and 2) you may need to adjust your picture taking to more underexpose everything ...in order to pull stuff out in post.

I find (Phaseone) Capture One (aka C1) has enough toys (tools) to play with or otherwise adjust the very outer extents of black and white. Pretty much up to the limit of your monitor (gamma, calibration, 'colour space' model or LUT). Indeed that of any one else's should they be interested in viewing.

Looking forward to my Q2M being delivered. Variously everything else is either ordered or already making its way here. My front path is going to get busy...

I don't disagree at all.  The Q2M absolutely handles the dynamic range between black and white wonderfully.  That being said I am still curious to learn about others editing techniques as this is a new experience for me.  This is my first monochrome camera, and to be clear, its not a grievance or a complaint about the camera at all, its just different.  There will be a learning curve.

I use Lightroom 6, but any iteration of Lightroom will handle contrast in a second. Once you have your favoured setting, you can save it. I've had the original Monochrom for a few years, and learned to underexpose when shooting. Then when I opened the files in Lightroom it only took a few seconds, literally, to adjust to my liking. Sounds like that is a good method for the Q2M as well. Protect the highlights.
