So I have to ask myself, why am I wandering around this forum, peeking at @Chaemono's S3 DNGs? I don’t think I can make any conclusion without directly use the camera under familiar lighting condition with familiar subject. Maybe I can get some info about DR, pixels quality. Other than that, I don’t know what I will get from the test. (Though I appreciate Charmono’s effort as always) At minimal I need see enough works from this camera (especially portrait) to make judgement. Hopefully, more users will show their works. Color is a controversy topic, the good thing is we only need to please ourselves in this regard.
Advertisement Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 Hi ZHNL, Take a look here Let's have a look at some DNG files from the S3. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Chaemono Posted April 3, 2020 Author Share #102 Posted April 3, 2020 (edited) Portraits is where the S3 with 120 Summarit excels, so do the X1D/II with the XCD 80/1.9, and the SL2 with the 90 Summicron-SL. 😂 I bet in a blind test of online images, no one could tell the three apart. As I stated before, the S3 will keep me company during the quarantine, then I’ll sell it. The Dow Jones will likely be at 2,000 points when it’s all over. I’ll put the proceeds from the S3 sale in the stock market and get my money back or trade it in for a loaf of bread if we are all living in subsistence economies by then. 🤣 Edited April 3, 2020 by Chaemono
Jeff S Posted April 3, 2020 Share #103 Posted April 3, 2020 Without making prints, might as well add a phone camera to the test. Jeff

Chaemono Posted April 5, 2020 Author Share #115 Posted April 5, 2020 Let's stop the lens down to f/5.6 and show one for tonality. First, as shot. ocean2059 Posted April 5, 2020 Share #117 Posted April 5, 2020 @Chaemono, really appreciate your posting of these raw and processed testing images. From what I see so far, the color profile of S3 seems closer to S2/S006 than to S007. What is your general feeling of S3's image quality relative to others, such as SL2?

The SL2’s base ISO is so good and the Summicron-SL lenses so fantastic that at ISO 100 the SL2 holds its own vs. the S3. SL2 pictures are a bit crispier, S3 a bit richer in tonality. But the differences are subtle. At higher ISO the S3 pulls ahead in terms of color but the SL2 has IBIS so no need to go that high in ISO. I may do a couple of side by side over/under shots but later. 1
ocean2059 Posted April 5, 2020 Share #119 Posted April 5, 2020 I fully agree with you that for base ISO, the APO Summicrion-SL 50 on SL/SL2 (I don't have the SL2 but use a Panasonic S1r) produces fantastic image quality in all aspects. I am happy to learn that in higher ISO, S3 starts to pull ahead. I was reluctant to get a S007 because its color profile is different than that of S2/S006. But I am thinking about getting the S3 later this year or next to combine with my 'lowly' S2 as a full landscaping and travel system.
tom0511 Posted April 8, 2020 Share #120 Posted April 8, 2020 interesting discussion. I would like to add that with the smaller FF sensor of SL2 one can shoot one f-stop wider open and still achieve same DOF like the larger s-sensor, so you gain 1 f-stop ISO. I also use both Systems but Overall still have the feeling that S-Images do have a smoother and more natural look in regards of midtones, Color and also Transition from focused subject to Background. Would you agree?
