shinobi2012 Posted December 15, 2022 Share #171 Posted December 15, 2022 This lens ist really wonderful. its a shame that the "focus shift" debate somehow reduces the Sonnars value. Which is nonsens. It draws very unique, and I have the Summilux 50 ASPh, Summilux 35 ASPH as well as the Summilux 35 (pre ASPH). also use many 50s like all Summicron versions and Elmars, Summitar.... And I can say, this Zeiss lens is very unique. Not for everyone, sure. 1. C200 / M7 2. Portra 160 / M7 3. FP4 / M7 4. Kodak gold / M7 Welcome, dear visitor! Pierre68 Posted December 15, 2022 Share #173 Posted December 15, 2022 Hi everybody I have this lens and tested it for focus shift this past week end. At 1.2m, it did front focus by 2cm at f/1.5 correct focus between f/2-F/4 and slight back focus at f/5.6 and lower aperture. I think this is the correct behavior for this lens, but I hav read somewhere on this forum that the lens could be sent to Zeiss to have it to focus correctly at F/1.5 in order to be able to use it wide open for portraits. I contacted Zeiss Switzerland by email but no answer so far. Does anyone have an address to which I could ship the lens (in EU) for calibration? Thanks in anticipation for your help Pierre

I think this is the correct behavior for this lens ... Indeed it is. Don't mess around with that! A very small front-focus at full aperture actually is a good thing, as other factors—namely, re-framing after focusing—will introduce some back-focus so the two factors will compensate each other. Just start using your lens as intended and see if the front-focus found in your test shots also shows up in your real-life shots.

Mine also front focuses in a similar manner and at first I thought I'd try to get it optimised for f1.5. Then I thought better of it. I didn't want to worsen back focus at other apertures and the front focus is easy to compensate for. I used to lean forward slightly before pressing shutter release. Now I tend to turn the focus slightly towards infinity. A bit of practice with an EVF mounted helps to fine-tune this action.
Keith (M) Posted December 17, 2022 Share #176 Posted December 17, 2022 Mine is optimised for f2.8 and as mentioned in another thread about the C-Sonnar I too adopted the 'lean-forward' technique for wide-open use. Here on M7 & Acros 100. Welcome, dear visitor! Thanks in anticipation for your help Pierre as already stated, leave it as it is...it is optimized for f2. I spoke to Zeiss about that. Unless you exclusively using this lens wide open. than I would get it calibrated for 1.5. i am considering that, because I have a Summilux 50 ASPH, which is sharp on every aperture on every distance...amazing lens. So I might get my Sonnar calibrated for 1.5..but leaning forward 1-2 cm (on film) its perfectly fine too. so not sure yet. Are there any Examples how this lens looks like wide open with perfect focus (using EVF) ? I would be interested in seeing that.
