Chassis #16 made in 1922, Felber Paris bodywork. Raced at Brooklands. Brought to Australia in 1929 by its later owner Gordon Mc Arthur. Original engine had (unfortunately) been modified in the 1930s, had to be replaced by owners son Alistair Mc Arthur during a mild restauration in the mid 1960s who found an original engine in England. Car shows original paint!

Edouard Ballot (former naval engineer) helped Ettore Bugatti making his good racing engines. The Ballot logo with the initials E.B. with an anchor is nice.

Ballot company sold to Hispano Suiza in the mid 1930s. Hard times for technically luxary fine art makers.

Yes Nigel, a Buick.  Can anyone guess the year?

I'm sure of the year, i.e. it's a 1955 model year car, but I'm not 100% on the model. Rodmasters, Centurys and Super models had 4 phone portholes in the front fender, the Specials had only three.  Century, Super and Specials were all built on the same chassis, but the Roadmasters had a longer wheelbase , but the 3/4 frontview  makes it difficult to make that determination.

John, the owner said it was a 1956 Buick Super Riveria, however here in the Socialist Republic of Victoria the registration authority treats a car according to the first year of being recorded whereby it could have left the factory in 1955 but was not road registered until 1956.  Well done.  Your turn.

John, you might be able to help on this one.  I have just "Googled" Buick Super Riveria and they all have different headlights from this car which incorporate the parking/indicator lights.  Any suggestions?

Hector,

I suspect this is what you're referring to ( please see photo of a '54 Super Riviera - not mine ) - those Buick headlights were a carryover from the '53-54 model years and were changed to the 'new' type of  headlight in midyear of the'55 model run and then continued well into the '56 & 57 models................shows that your green mystery car is a late '55 unit with the separate, single round headlight with the chrome  'eyelid'.

Don't forget that was during the era of  GM's "Motorama" dreamcar program where they would take one-off styling studies, parade them across the country and conduct focus-studies to gage public acceptance and then incorporate the most popular trickery in their production cars. The years following the domestic production volume break-through year of '55 produced  such phenomena as the tail fin craze, hidden gas filler doors and the grotesque obsession with with chrome.

Will post anew puzzle as soon as I find time

Thanks for jumping in, Hektor. Only Roadmaster I was able to drive here in Germany was a 1953 4-door Sedan back in the early 1990s.

We were young men and thought a Mc Donalds restaurant would be a nice location for such an US car. Unfortunately German Mc Donald Drive-Ins were to small for such vehicles, we had to park the car outside to avoid damaged whitewall tyres 😉 (today with all the soccer mums SUVs and craftmens Oversize-Pick Up trucks it would work I guess)

I suppose you could call this the 'Peter Read Special' - although the coachbuilder who conceived, initiated and executed this project certainly had no idea of Read's subsequent involvement.  I submit that a more accurate description including marque, model  and at least one distinguishing characteristic / fact about this unique car is called for, if for no other reason than to demonstrate that you actually know what specific car this is, and so others might learn something.

Respectfully,

JZG
