Nice combo! How long do you suppose it will be before your M6 looks as good as your M4? <g>

I am trying, i am trying... :) The picture is taken 4 years ago. And the look of the M6 LHSA is starting to look better/used. But that is after 8 years non professional usage. I guess i need 10 - 15 more years before it looks as my M4. Were the orignal black paint really just as tough? Reliable .. hmm don't know the exact english word here but i hope you know what i mean ... hmm durable i guess is a better word?

My first Leica M6 that I bought in 1994, with grey dot, Luigi strap, and a matching 'cron 35 IV chrome attached to it:

During 11 years I shot about 90% of all pictures with this combination. Since 9 months I mostly use the M8 + 'cron 28 + 'lux 50, but I keep this one loaded with b/w film mostly.

Cheers,

Norbert

I just got my M6 overhauled. They replaced a foam seal that had disintegrated and caused a light leak that was ruining an increasing number of photos. The only other thing I'd like done is an MP viewfinder upgrade. The MP is really much easier to focus.

I know the camera - particularly the colour (!) doesn't have much bearing on the pictures it produces, however many of us seem to prefer black paint with a little 'patina' to black chrome or traditional vulcanite to another skin. I like what someone had to say: 'We're photographers, why shouldn't we be concerned with the aesthetics of our photographic tools?' Green's my favourite colour, so naturally when I came across this and coupled it with the chrome Summicron it brought me some satisfaction. :D

Is that green leather and green paint? Just out of interest, how did it get like that -- customised or commercially available? Richard Caplan's, a UK store, currently has an M6 ttl in green leather (but not green paint too, I don't think) -- http://www.richardcaplan.co.uk/eCommerce/product.aspx?cat=66&prod=2053 -- and I was just curious if you or anyone else knew where these M6 oddities come from. Were they special editions? To judge by the price of the one on the Caplan site (GBP 799.00) f they are special editions they don't carry much of a premium...

Dear Alun,

You are quite correct - green leather AND green paint. It is known as the M6 Safari (see Leica R3 Safari for SLR version) or Millennium Green M6. It is not customised, it was in fact a special order by Leica's far east subsidiary (Schmidt?) to mark the millennium and possibly a tribute to the M3 Olive Bundeseigentum. I had heard of their existence for some time, but had never seen one - there were only 300 made and naturally they were difficult to get hold of in the UK!

I have seen the body at R. Caplan you speak of and can tell you it's not the same. If my memory serves me correctly it was/is black chrome with green leather cladding, this would most certainly have been retrofitted - it is essentially a standard M6 black chrome with green leather and though the green grip was is relatively attractive, the rest of the body is bog standard, that's why it's circa £800!

Notice the M3 style controls: the chrome rewind and advance lever, regard the green paint and the engraved Leica script, the Millennium Green M6 was definitely a return to Leica's core values - rugged and functional yet beautiful in design.

For the 'low down' (incidentally the leatherette is not as light or as brown as the one displayed on this site) see:

Leica M6 TTL Green

I found one on currently on Ebay in the States which seem very good value, cheaper than what I paid, but it's not new:

Leica M6 TTL .85 Green Paint limited edition + leicavit - eBay (item 150306728670 end time Nov-27-08 23:22:50 PST)

I bought mine new from abroad and once I'd paid for insured shipping and import duty and VAT I had paid well over what you'd pay for a brand new M6 TTL - they're not cheap, but they are beautiful and should last forever.

I hope that answers your question and sorry to enthuse at such length, but my belief is that they were the most handsome M6 TTLs, the M6 Millennium Black Paint with itinerant lenses is very nice too.
