The Globe Trotter bag costs £2,000.

Shoot me now …

BANG . . . looks like a version of the attache case which (only!) costs £1,350.

How much did the previous pink and navy blue Q + Globe Trotter case cost?  Probably a similar premium and just as naff.  I mean, why buy a compact camera with a HUGE case?

Every time Leica produces a silly limited edition, we all say: "Ah, but it's good for the bottom line because it all goes to subsidise the great products we really want to buy."

This silly camera falls into the same category, but you can't measure cost benefit just by sales revenue.  The internet is already awash with articles about this camera - lots of free advertising that will reach people who probably wouldn't know the Leica brand.

That's the real cost benefit, but I still think it's a truly naff product!

I had an original Batmobile toy when I was a kid. It had little orange plastic projectiles that came out of exhausts on the roof somehow.

Within a week, we had to shoot matches out.

I looked after most of my toy cars and kept the original boxes - mostly matchbox models.

I still like to buy the odd model car and did buy a 'new' James Bond Aston Martin a few years ago, for display only! I still have the Lotus Esprit with flip out fins and missile launcher although I too had to resort to matches after the first couple of days.

My last purchase was a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - not one I ever had back in the day. Still one of my favourite films and of course the work of Ian Fleming.

I usually don't chime in on the fear and loathing for Leica specials, but this one seems over the top: It's a pretty toy for people with way more discretionary income than I. Or, perhaps, a lot less discretion...

I'll take a Q2 Monochrom @ $6200 or M10 Monochrom body @ $8995 over a Q2 "007 Special Edition" toy, regardless of whether it comes with a matching attache case or not. ;)

Given the almost childish "punning" in the films - particularly the Roger Moore iterations - I'm staggered there is no connection made with the fact that it is 'Q' who is the Quartermaster supplying Bond with his gadgets...

I'm sure Connery would have said "thanksh Q - I'll give it a shot and see what developsh 😉" or some such drollery.

Those of you who are so quick to ridicule this camera should remember that it is only by selling such embarrassingly vulgar stuff that Leica is able to keep the price of its serious M glass (Noctilux, APO etc) down to such a reasonable price that the rest of us can afford. 🙃

I also had the Bond DB4 Aston Martin toy, complete with steel shield, machine guns and ejector seat.  Mine was green, strangely - didn’t bother me as a kid.  My favourite toy as a boy in the 1960s.

While this isn’t my glass of martini, shaken or stirred, it doesn’t really bother me.  Lots of publicity for both the rather ugly luggage maker (give me Remowa any day) and for Leica; and contrary to some comments, it won’t make the back orders on 35 APO Summicron-M lenses any longer, save for increased orders.  This is nothing more than a rebadging and recovering of an existing camera.  What additional cost is that?

As a Leica user, it’s no cost to me and profit to the company.

Wouldn't that equally apply to an M camera?

Pete.

“Oh DO pay attention Bond!”

Unlike ‘Q’ I think ‘M’ is absolutely not enamoured or concerned with innovative gadgets, fancy electronics, cutting-edge technology, or being the “latest and greatest”.

Oh hang on....🤔

The new M11 will of course be featured in the new “Spinal Tap” movie and will include a collapsible model of Stonedhedge wrapped in a muddy sleeping bag in the giveaway package…

Schrodinger's cameras.

This is a model I'd like to see: the Leica "Schrödinger edition". Is it a camera or a lens, or a lens hood or only a thank-you-please-read-all-of-these-instructions-and-dispose-responsibly card? Don't know; buy one, open the box and find out. Will it help you take better pictures or impress people? Don't know; open the box and find out. Excess inventory = profit, one limited serial number at a time. Then there's the "Legacy edition": repairs people sent in and never paid for nor wanted back.

Honestly, though: this will make people happy. Good on you, customer, for getting what you want; and good on you, merchant, for supplying what is wanted.

Going by the sobriquet "Le Chef", Le Chiffre?  Clever, but your subterfuge won't fool 007!

Is there any actual evidence of that? I don't buy it (literally). The lenses you mention are nowhere close to "affordable" anyway. I don't think any of the special editions lower the prices of anything else. I think they just bring in more profit for Leica in an extremely easy way. They price as much as they think the market will bear for all products...I don't suspect it would change that much even if they did not offer these special editions. I think the opposite actually...instead of letting the prices drop as the cameras reach the end of their life cycle, Leica makes them a "P" version and charges a premium or sells a special edition with a few extras and charges a huge premium. Occasionally they make an "E" version, but that seems to be more often when they have a lot of unsold stock or they are sitting on a lot of sensors that they cannot use in their other cameras (ME, SE etc).
