LexOntario, Always interested!

Jaap, if you are ever in the neighborhood (Vancouver's pretty close)  I'd be delighted to make you a cappuccino. Sadly the Saggi (an exceptional bottle of wine at any aperture) is all gone :)

Suffice it to focus off center. Easier to do it with an EVF though. Problem is with RF you can do it but you must recompose and focus is not nailed anymore due to field curvature. For your pic above you would get the same kind of bokeh as DwF's image with a Summilux. Not to say that i don't like my 50/2 apo but the most beautiful f/2 lens can only give what it has:cool:.

No comments on posts 99 and 100? To me the background blur is nicer at 1.4. Or was the picture taken nearer to the bottle that in post 100?

I tried a bit post 103. Background blur depends on DoF and DoF is not the same at f/1.4 and f/2. Now as a f/2 lens, i find that 50/2 apo has smooth bokeh generally.

Depending on period, Leitz engraved the lenses in "cm" or in "mm".

So some Elmar were engraved "5cm" and some other Elmar engraved "50mm".

I believe that evikne was referring to the fact that technically there is no difference between 5cm and 50mm.

It was mostly meant as a joke, but at the same time I have never been quite sure why there are different terms. Something a.noctilux explained just fine.

It has to do with habits changing over time. Even nowadays, if you would like to buy meat or sliced ham in for example Germany, you would usually tell the person at the counter that you want X grams of ham (100 g for example). In neighboring Austria, however, if you were to buy 100g of sliced ham, you would say "I want 10 deka of sliced ham", with "deka" being the abbreviation for dekagram, i.e. 10 grams. As above, it is technically the same, but habits vary over time and according to location.

Cheers,

Andy

Yes, shooting in live view or with an evf alleviates these issues due to a moveable focus point. With a RF, you have to focus, recompose, and (fine tune) which is a guessing game. It’s possible, but not guaranteed.

+1. When i referred to EVFs i meant with a moveable focus point indeed. Easy to focus off centre at f/1.4 then. Just a test pic with the 50/1.4 asph at f/1.4 below.

I’ve tried all Leica 50mm offerings and in the end which did I keep? Only these two: Collapsible summicron and summilux Pre-asph v1.
Noctilux f1 was great to but just too heavy to truly enjoy. The rigid / DR is also an amazing lens, but in the end I missed the more unique rendering of the collapsible, so I sold the rigid and returned to the collapsible. Another great, small 50 that can complement your APO if you’re not ready to sell it’s the Elmar f2.8
