PaulJohn Posted January 5, 2016 Share #1 Posted January 5, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am guessing that like me, other M240 owners have a DSLR system and one or more film cameras. I am less interested in your complete arsenal of gear as in what you use for what occasions. I bought my M240 to replace my X100T that I had a love/hate relationship with. I used the X100T for street and family occasions. I used my DSLR kit for landscapes and my film cameras to compliment my X100T. Trouble is I prefer the files out of my M240 to my DSLR (Nikon D810) which I totally did not expect. So now I am torn and end up carrying more gear. I can go wide with my M240 by stitching so its only events and action that I really need my DSLR for. So, do you have a system for what you use when and did the M240 mess your system up? Mark Pope Posted January 5, 2016 Share #2 Posted January 5, 2016 I used to have a DSLR kit comprising a Canon 5D Mk 2 and half a dozen lenses. I part-exchanged it along with an M9-P for my M240 on New Year's eve. Due to the weight of the DSLR outfit, I hadn't used it for a year, so it made sense to get rid of it. Now all I have is the M240 along with a bunch of M lenses plus a DL109 and I'm very happy.
johnwolf Posted January 5, 2016 Share #3 Posted January 5, 2016 I shoot mostly B&W, an interest well-served by an MM. For occasional color I like the X-Pro1 with a couple XF lenses, which allow AF. Slow, but good enough. And a somewhat convincing RF gestalt. My second most used camera is a GR. Sometimes I think I could unload everything except the Ricoh. It's B&W output is also teriffic. otto.f Posted January 5, 2016 Share #4 Posted January 5, 2016 Oh no not at all. I don't own an M240 but since I sold my R8 in favor of an M7, I had no (D)SLR's any more, except for a short time Canon 5d (not wanting to say goodbye to my Elmarit60macro R), went through with the digital M's and am happily on hold now with M9 and MM. No need for reflexes or even SL or Sony A7's
Joshua Lowe Posted January 5, 2016 Share #5 Posted January 5, 2016 Timely thread. I just sold my M240 after buying an MM246. I wasn't planning to, but it made sense for a few reasons. I spent a lot of time over the weekend considering what I want vs. what I need in a secondary camera. My backups will be a Ricoh GR and a film M body. saxo Posted January 5, 2016 Share #6 Posted January 5, 2016 .... So, do you have a system for what you use when and did the M240 mess your system up? I use a M9 (instead of a M240) and recently I added a SL, which is a perfect combination. These two camera systems are perfect complementary. For film I take my M7 (or medium format). Luke_Miller Posted January 5, 2016 Share #7 Posted January 5, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) When I shoot for clients it is my D4 and D810. I love the results I can achieve with them, but not so much the actual photography. Maybe it is because it seems like work. When I shoot for me it is my M-240 and sometimes my Df. Every time I pick either of them up I want to go take pictures with them.
lucerne Posted January 5, 2016 Share #8 Posted January 5, 2016 I think you will be surprised at the number of Leica users that don't mix it! No DSLR for me anymore. I work within the capabilities of my preferred M digital system and my Q. Once I ditched the big bodies and large lenses I became liberated. To add to my pleasure, I no longer want complex menus, multiple configurable buttons that confuse me, and oversize accessories. Even my bag is smaller. International travel is much simpler. Photoskeptic Posted January 5, 2016 Share #9 Posted January 5, 2016 I use my M-P for street and travel. D810 for landscape. I also have an ALPA TC waiting for a digital back (when the prices become a bit more sane).
ramarren Posted January 5, 2016 Share #10 Posted January 5, 2016 I have way more cameras than I know what to do with, but that's changing. The general rule of thumb now goes: The M-P is for when I want to carry a light bag and concentrate on 35-50-75 FoV. The Leicaflex SL, R8, M4-2, Hassy SWC, Minox C, and Polaroid SX-70 are for when I want to revisit film's unique look and feel. The SL is for everything else. The rest are for sale. hepcat Posted January 5, 2016 Share #11 Posted January 5, 2016 I don't have an M240. I use my M9P for everything, and have a Fuji X-T1 body with an 18-135ws zoom and M mount adapter as a second body. The X-T1 comes out if I want live-view or video; if I need a second body; or if I'm going somewhere with nasty weather or conditions that I'd rather not expose the M9 to. asiafish Posted January 5, 2016 Share #12 Posted January 5, 2016 I own the M9 generation as opposed to the M240 (M-E and M Monochrom) and have found that I love using them with 35mm and 50mm lenses, but not so much with longer and shorter. Generally I take my M kit when visiting cities as they are great for street photography, and I also like them at events, especially indoors. I'll also use the Leicas for solo travel, such as business trips, where I'm not expected to produce a photobook for the family at the end. I also own a Canon SLR system centered around the 6D and have two sets of lenses prime lenses, fast Carl Zeiss manual focus and smaller and lighter Canon autofocus, and a single Canon zoom (24-105mm f/4 L). For the annual family vacation I'll typically take the Canon with the zoom lens and the Zeiss primes for when I have some slower moments. For formal portraits which I do from time to time, I generally prefer the Canon with the Zeiss lenses, though occasionally I'll use the Leica and a vintage Sonnar if I want a more vintage look. I also shoot film, and have a Leica M5 and Canon EOS 650 for use with each respective lens kit. Strangely, the Canon film camera with the Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 is one of my favorite combinations. Jon Warwick Posted January 5, 2016 Share #13 Posted January 5, 2016 I mainly use an M240. But when I want higher resolution + different look compared to the M240, I use the M7 with Adox 20 film. I'm also considering an Alpa (STC), which provides the flexibility of a modular platform for both digital and film backs. I previously used a Mamiya 7 and 5x4 film, so an Alpa loosely combines things i liked about both of those cameras into one package (movements on a tripod as with the 5x4; but handhold-able like the Mamiya 7, etc). Joshua Lowe Posted January 6, 2016 Share #15 Posted January 6, 2016 There are several cameras I'd like to get for the sake of a small collection. Xpan, Contax G2, Mamiya 7ii, maybe a Hassy 503.
lct Posted January 6, 2016 Share #16 Posted January 6, 2016 My favorite camera, so far, is a Sony A7s modified by Kolari Vision that i use with M and R lenses only. It lacks a rangefinder but has almost all what i'd like to find in a modern Leica body i.e. small size and weight, speed, clean high isos, ergonomics, silence and discretion. The next Leica RF will have all that hopefully but i don't hold my breath. In the meantime, i still use my M240 with pleasure when i need a rangefinder. I also use a Sigma DP2m for landscapes and some Nikon gear for my job and when i need AF telephotos.

I have a Leica T which I use for Architecture, occasional astrophotography and very casual shooting when I'm not expecting to shoot anything. The classic I'm going to the grocery store, why do I need a camera? Then: OMG check that out ... I have a Olympus E-M1 that I use for telephoto (birds mostly) and macro. Really it is mostly macro these days but that might move to the T when the macro lens becomes available. When the macro TL lens comes out I'll probably ditch my whole E-M1 kit and get either the 55-135 TL lens or wait for the 90-280 SL which will be fun on the T. earleygallery Posted January 6, 2016 Share #19 Posted January 6, 2016 I've got too many cameras to list! Mostly film cameras. The one's I use/have used the most in the last few years are (in no particular order); Leica's lllf, M2 & R3 Canon M Canon 50D & 30D Bronica ETRS Kodak Box Brownie I'm thinking of buying a FF Canon this year but I'm reluctant to to lose the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 lens I use with the 50D, the results are so pleasing. The Canon M has been my 'carry everywhere' camera and it's 22mm prime is a little gem of a lens. With my Leica's I have a hard time choosing between them. Too many cameras, too little time!
