Fixed it for you :)

It's arrived FOC- that's the part number if it helps anyone. My problem now is I am in Dubai working and my hood is in UK so I cannot tell you if it solves the problem :)
Then I go to Vanuatu for a few years so .....

I would be interested to see what it looks like out of its wrapping Newboy.

Leica Miami have the same part number for what looks like the original hood.

https://leicastoremiami.com/products/leica-lens-hood-for-50mm-f-1-4-summilux-black-chrome-11688?variant=26725105424.

Leica probably pulls the original hood part from stock and modifies it, then they probably put in back in the same packaging to ship out.

  • 4 months later...

The lens arrived this evening.

When I tried to put the B+W 43mm UV filter on, it won’t fit. So I went to verify it in the manual. Interestingly enough, manual said filter size is E46. But on the next page, under FILTERS, it still says a E43.

Should I buy 43mm? Or 46mm?

Probably a copy-paste from the original manual for 50/1.4 ASPH. The filter size is 43mm.

Hi a.noctilux

The filter i got is B+W 43mm XS-Pro Clear MRC-Nano 007 Filter

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/905844-REG/b_w_661073871_43mm_xs_pro_nano_mc_clear_007.html/overview

Although B&H didn't list the thread pitch size, but i saw other website listed this 007 series of filter has 0.75mm pitch thread.

Thanks

@AndrewK

Needing E43 with 0.75 mm pitch filter, I think.

The E43 filter that you have may that be E43 with  0.5 mm pitch ?

I'm the OP. I sold my "limited edition of 500" copy of this lens in 2016 because of the hood issue, and lack of patience after several months, of trying to receive a solution from Leica.

I've just read through the 20 pages here. It made me smile. Why? Because there is actually a real community 'here' of Leica enthusiasts. Where is 'here'? Everywhere in the world, and here on the forum.

Why am I back? Because today I just bought a 50mm Summilux-M ASPH black chrome not limited edition, manufactured June 2020, brand new. Well, I say not limited edition, but it seems identical to the limited edition one I bought originally* - and testing it with a B+W 43mm filter, the same problem persists. (*It is possible, of course, that this piece really is limited to 500 pieces, allocated in chunks over several years of production - 5 and counting - and that 500 will be reached any day now!)

I bought it today for three reasons - 1. I had serious serious GAS for the 1.2/50 Noct AA reissue black anodised 'standard' version. That piece is still either a long wait, or a premium over full list price in the grey market. Patience, I have learned, in Leicaland, works well for the buyer. 2. I learned from buying the 1.4/50 BC the first time around that 'limited' - unless explicitly limited to x/xxx engraved on the lens, is really limited to.... demand. (see point 1, though also *). 3. I really missed this lens, despite the problem with the hood. The sensible part of me almost pulled the trigger on the regular black anodised 1.4/50ASPH - much lighter, a bit cheaper, focusing tab is useful, E46 filter (thats works with the retractable hood!) - same as your 35FLE and 21SEM, etc. Etc. But, finally points 1. and 2. merged into rationalisation for (re-)getting this BC, ahem, "edition".

I will write to Leica to see if they will also send me their replacement hood. It would be great to have it, as I intend to use this most on my M10 Monochrom, with coloured filters, and having the option to attach a hood would be interesting. But otherwise... I don't know. I'm tempted to go.... hoodless! 😃

How are you guys getting on with you (un)limited BC edition 1.4/50LX ASPH?

And, in case I didn't allow all 20 pages to sink in, there seem to be these solutions explained therein:
1. find specialty slim/narrow flush filters that allow the supplied hood to fit (UV maybe, but I want to use colours, so no chance)
2. Have your supplied hood modified 3rd party to screw on to the lens or filter E43
3. "" Leica do the same
4. By Thorsten Overgaard's 3rd part E43 hood, designed especially.
5. Leica provide a (free!) replacement (without exchange necessary) hood that will effectively do #3 as a one-piece. (part 422-700.040-000).

I will write to Leica to see if they will supply this, and report back.

Meantime I'm going to use if either with the supplied hood or a UV filter, and look for some E43 colour filters to play with on the M10M.

Thanks

Hi

And a very nice wrap-up of a long story…

I was one of those (stupidly enought) that was caught by surprice by this filter/hood issue AFTER receiving my BC 🤪

Status now is that I have received the free replacement hood from Leica. But still tend to use the lens without the hood 😉

I wrote to the Leica engineer I was dealing with 6 years ago. Email bounced back - he has left, it seems. I forwarded that (and the background correspondence) to the customer servide team. They responded within a day, and copied in the Hong Kong Leica team to their reply. I have responded to both with my contact details. Let's see. I have my fingers crossed all will be resolved very soon given (thanks @newboy) a Leica solution is at hand.

I will update once I have something to share.

Wetzlar fixed my BC hood quickly, and obviously free of charge. However, I never use it, instead I use a simple metal ventilated 43mm hood (6 eur) which works perfectly fine for me. I's light too, the BC is already heavy enough.

P.S. The BC stays more often in the bag in favor of the wonderful compact and light Nokton 50mm Asph II MC.

I wrote to Leica Wetzlar and they sent me a screw-in hood free of charge to be used with the lens or E43 Leica UV filter. As I have a few E46 ND filters I also bought the Overgaard E43->E46 hood that works great. Quality is ok and paint as well. But the site said in stock but was of course not, took 3 months to arrive and communication was appalling, and I had to chase every week to be updated...

Hi Patrik, did you email customer care at Leica Wetzlar (customer.care@leica-camera.com)? Or Product Support (info@leica-camera.com)?

I've recently purchased this lens too and would be great to have the screw-in hood.

Thanks

Hi

If I remember correct it was to customer car. Had to send a reminder after a few weeks but then it came quick.
I have heard they are quite understaffed at the moment and they take longer to sort things out.
Nevertheless, such a great lens and for me a huge improvement over the regular Lux.
Good luck!

Patrik

I have the v2 50mm Summilux with the 12586 hood, which I *think* has the identical issue you have experienced.  This thread has solved my problem without modification of the lens or the hood.  I simply take the unmounted hood and squeeze the hood mounting tabs, then drop the filter (a regular B+W UV) in from the front of the hood, release the hood tabs to hold the filter in place, and then screw the filter into the lens threads.  Granted, the hood mounting tabs are not what holds the hood in place on the lens, rather the filter threads do.  But, it works great and the combination does not extend the hood outwardly any further than it would be if mounted without a filter.  For me, a perfect solution.
