I think the mint cameras are a different market due to collectors.  I would go for one with some signs of wear and save about half the price.  For M3’s it is common to have flaking vulcanite.  This usually results in a more reasonable price.  The good news is the replacement vulcanite costs only $22 from aki asahi in Japan and the camera will look like new again.

In Euros/Pounds the going rate for a nice user M2/3 is 800-1200 and an M6 1500-2000 from a reputable dealer.

I saw a mint M3 going for around 2900 usd (just the unit and a cap) and a mint titanium m6 complete with box going for 2600 usd. That’s why i was surprised. From the same reputable shop, although I’m located in Asia so who knows.. haha maybe the collectors here of mint cameras are making the M3s skyrocket. 🙂

A “mint” M3 is very different from your original inquiry.  I don’t know the price rangers of collector-grade cameras.

Yea sorry about that. But my inquiry is also in general. In the shops I’ve checked so far similar condition m6 and m3 were in a similar price range or the m3 is higher.

no complaints and nothing negative to say about both cameras and the shops. I was just surprised  so I wanted to know if this is the case all over the world too or just near me. It was just out of curiosity since I was trying to choose between the 2 models. 🙂

That's absurd.

Wonder how it got to Canada? Interesting to do a bit of research on the  first UK owner. I think I would want a little more confirmation it was the last as "latest produced" dosn't mean that or maybe slight change of emphasis, intentional or other wise, in translation. You would also expect this to be in one of the 'big' auctions if the provenance stands up. Nice camera though, and good to see some decent pictures of what they looked like new.

It’s Incredible that this iconic camera M3 has always been a great way to see and photograph the world, yes I am regretting parting with

my M3 — why because I never really understood the technique of looking after the camera— I  did TRY !!!

I worked for a medical research clinic in the '80s. I photographed patients but was expected to be available for parties and photograph the famous folk who came to the clinics.  One night I was there with 2 M2s around my neck, a doc comes up to me and asks why I am still using Leicas, they belong in a display case. That is who the mint Leicas are for. I told him that they work better for this situation than any other camera.

That’s what I meant by seeing the world through the imagination of the M3 and of course these days it’s a smartphone.

A while ago a conversation with a Doctor I spoke too about my M3 he said. ( he could not afford a Leica )

What was the purchase price for the M3 in 1954 ?  -  how much now ? ?  It’s strange how much has changed about our feelings for this

iconic camera, I know that I regret changing my M3 for the M6 .

Hello Spero Pa,

Welcome to the Forum.

I don't know about 1954 but in 1965 an M3 was $306 in the USofA. Gasoline at the pump in the USofA was  about 7 cents a liter for leaded regular.

Best Regards,

Michael

Serial n° of M3 lacks one digit or this is a "Leica III" ( Model F ) modified to M3 ?

Dr of medicine? Now or back in the day? I would the Dr.'s were one of the few who could afford new, and many did.
