wlaidlaw Posted October 27, 2021 Share #16301 Posted October 27, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) The only question is - is it a 330 or 365? I had the later 365 GTC/4 in the early 1980's, which my kids still speak of as "Dad's brown Ferrari. I try to remind them that Steve McQueen had a brown Ferrari but it cuts no ice 😶. Mute-on Posted October 27, 2021 Share #16302 Posted October 27, 2021 Since @hektor has the benefit of local knowledge, I will await the first model specific nomination from another. Clearly a smaller crop was necessary. J

a.j.z Posted October 28, 2021 Share #16307 Posted October 28, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry for OT, but with alle the experts around and while we are waiting for a new riddle: A friend is looking for a car with a quite complex profile of requirements to combine the needs of various stakeholders: - Classic car (which here means at least 30 years old) - Sporty to drive (not less then 200 hp) but on the other hand with some comfort (air condition, comfortable seats with headrests, possibility to have a conversation even on the highway, luggage compartment that is worth mentioning - ideally "two golf bags" size, potentially ABS) - 2 door And finally: it should look like a classic car and not just like an old car (so, e.g., an 80s BMW or Mercedes rather would not qualify but something with 60s/70s design - preferably European - but 80s comfort). I cannot think of many cars that could fit - probably Aston Martin V8 (but difficult to find an affordable LHD Coupe and a friend told me that they are not nice to drive?), Ferrari 365/400/412 (but no head-turner although it looks better in real life than on photos), 70s BMW CSI (comfort?), Jaguar XJ Coupe (on the one hand relatively cheap but on the other hand thus often not in good condition), Porsche 928 (luggage?), Bentley/Rolls (too big and you know ...)? To avoid too much OT hints via PM are welcome. Thanks!
wlaidlaw Posted October 28, 2021 Share #16308 Posted October 28, 2021 (edited) I would consider an R107 Mercedes, either an SL or SLC. Probably a 450 or 500. These are reasonably priced and far more reliable than most classic cars. Their only weak point is the powered roof. They can be improved a lot with stiffer shock absorbers from the likes of Bilstein or even better Ohlins. I don't terribly like them because I prefer the smaller air cooled Porsche 911 cars, since I don't ever need to carry golf bats. The Aston Martins are nightmares of unreliability, the Ferraris are rot boxes although nice cars but spare parts are eye wateringly expensive. The Jaguars are both rot boxes and unreliable (particularly the Lucas ignition). The Porsche 928 is again unreliable and now difficult to get serviced or repaired. If prepared to look at a slightly smaller car, the Porsche 968's are quick, have excellent handling, they are well rust proofed and reasonably reliable. They are much easier to repair than a 928. Another car to consider which would meet all the requirement would be a Bristol, as long as the previous owner has sorted the electrics, which are often problematic. The oily bits being standard Chrysler are long lived and reliable. They have a big boot, which would accommodate the golf bags. stuny Posted October 28, 2021 Share #16310 Posted October 28, 2021 I think that the original Acura NSX in the US, Honda NSX elsewhere, would qualify - handsome, solid performance, relatively inexpensive servicing, very reliable, the first of the high end sports cars that was easy to live with, fun to drive, and with excellent outward visibility. Introduced in 1990.
Rona!d Posted October 28, 2021 Share #16311 Posted October 28, 2021 968 could be a very good option although the best models are not 30 years yet. I would have thought of an E9 3.0 CSi Coupe but those can have rust issues and if not they are too expensive and it does not fullfill the "modern" requirements your friend has. I would take a 1990s sports car and wait some years until it is 30 years old (insurance/tax "Historic" numberplate reasons?) If he wants older and could get an M 635 CSi in perfect condition ...
John Z. Goriup Posted October 29, 2021 Share #16312 Posted October 29, 2021 After reading your friend's requirements and giving this some thought, I would strongly recommend a car which I believe fulfills every point laid out better than almost any other car available.... the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, factory code R 129. Produced from 1988 to '93, it morphed through various stages of development, with a variety of engine types and sizes available, but I submit that the model-0engine choice that is / should be of most interest to someone looking for the type of car described in post # 16307 is the 300 /320 SL . The 3.0 liter in-line six cylinder motor is one of the best ever M-B passenger car engines, but it only got better when it became a 3.2 liter 24-valve motor and was used to power the 300 SL-24. Another unique and to me absolutely essential option of this wondrous machine is the fact that it was available with a 5-speed standard shift transmission, making it one of the true, classic GT cars for a 'classic' motoring enthusiast. If someone's looking for a continent-crossing 'gentleman's Express' this is the car for you. Yes, it's a Mercedes, which means it's solid, on the heavy side, with well over 200 HP , consequently performance is not neck-snapping, but perfectly adequate never the less.I bought a new one in '89 and put almost a quarter million miles on it with less maintanance expenses that almost any car I've ever owned................and enjoyed every moment of my time with the car, in fact I would say it's the best Mercedes I've ever owned, if not the best car overall I've owned. The only reason I no longer have it is that two bum knees made shifting agony instaed of the pleasure it was when I first bought it. Safe, exceedingly well built, sporting, superb handling & braking, economical and sublimely comfortable ( it's essential that this model is purchased with the detachable hardtop - if the model you're looking at does not include one, go find a good used one and buy it ) and God knows you won't loose money on this car should you decide to sell it. This series of M-Bs is among the finest ever produced by them and I simply can't recommend the 300 SL highly enough. Rare, but most certainly worth it since most of them were bought & owned by genuine enthusiasts who knew what they have / had and therefore maintained them in top condition. Respectfully, JZG 1

JZG Thanks ablot John for this detailed answer. My father in law has a 300SL since 1990 and it had a lot of issues (although it got every service from MB and was always parked in a garage). It even needed a replacement engine although it did not have a lot of km on it (he kept it for sentimental reasons). While it may be what we call a „Monday Car“ I still would not recommend it to a friend.
