Great puzzle Rona!d

Could we be looking at a Ghia design?

I was about say it seems similar in part to the Fiat 1500S OSCA or regular Cabrio but that dashboard crop suggests otherwise....maybe more exotic than a fiat...

Nigel, as this car became one of my favourites about 30 years ago when I accidently stumbled over it under a barn roof (in restored condition) this riddle starts to become a pleasure. When I first met this model I was clueless as you guys but I fell in love immediately.

Forget Ghia and forget FIAT although the carrozzeria which made the body also worked with FIAT.

Is it a UK manufactured car with the bodywork provided by an Italian designer / manufacturer?

P.

I had looked at this with Touring...there was a certainly a link between Aston and Touring, but also Sunbeam cf. the  Sunbeam Venezia - but I don’t think there was a “designer” version of the Alpine/Tiger that would fit the puzzle car though the door cut lines/dash suggest a similar 2-seat spider/coupe...

The pronounced curvature of the front screen in post #15701 is, for me, the most intriguing part of the 'visual' stuff so-far...

Philip.

For me it’s the shut line of the door...

In the brochure the maker called the car "Roadster-Cabriolet" because it was a Roadster with a better roof like a Cabriolet.

Not sure if you can google that. The todays official add-on after the model name is cabrio or coupe.

Glas GT which, in 1967 morphed in to a BMW 1600 GT

Finally we have a winner, congratulations hektor. Where have you been? I counted on you!

This is a GLAS 1300 GT Cabrio with the later engine hood of the 1700 GT, both models used it.

In the 1950s the bavarian company Glas planned to take over BMW, in 1966 it was BMW who bought Glas.

As hektor mentioned, BMW replaced the engine and rear axle and built the GT for another year as BMW 1600 GT (but only coupes and one or two convertible prototypes).

They also built the Glas V8 Coupe ("Glaserati") with BMW logo but Glas engine.

Most of you might know Glas from their microcar Goggomobil. After the end of Glas the limousine version of the 1700 GT, the 1700 was licensed to other countries and in South Africa they made it with a BMW front and BMW engines (BMW 1800 GL/SA, BMW 2000 GL/SA, BMW 1804 and BMW 2004).

The design company of the 1300/1700 GT was Frua but the bodies were made at Maggiora who also made:

- Bristol 412 and Beaufighter (as sub of Zagato)

- Bitter SC

- Alfa Romeo 2000 Touring

- Fiat 2300 S Coupe

- Lancia Aurelia B20, Flaminia Touring, Kappa Coupe

- Maserati Mistral

- De Tomaso Mangusta and Pantera

The modern Fiat Barchetta was their volume model.

Dear Rona!d,

Great thread.

I don't think it is much fun for everyone when a car is immediately recognised and which is why I wait a while if certain of the answer.

Will find something shortly.

Yours

Hektor
