My M2 just returned from YeYe Camera.  The rangefinder was adjusted but Youxin said it did not need a CLA because he had done it 3 years ago.  He also tightened my 50 Summicron for a total charge of $60 instead of a couple hundred for a full CLA.  Since I did not have a film Leica during the time the camera was in for maintenance, I find myself the owner of a 3f made in the year I was born (1952).  I have never owned a LTM body before.

Film Leicas are fun!

And my M2 just returned from DAG!  Don installed a new, later model frame line mask to replace the yellowing, "spider-webbed" original as well as fitting a larger, M4-type viewfinder aperture. The M2 had been the subject of a CLA earlier this year, so it now functions perfectly.  As I told Mr. Goldberg, I had forgotten how bright and clear a Leica rangefinder/viewfinder could be. I spent the afternoon playing with the camera as if I had just bought a brand new one.

ktmrider2 is right -- film Leicas are fun!

Hello. Long time member of Minolta/Sony forum Dyxum.com but my first time here. Particularly fond of film cameras and I've waited until my seventy-third year to acquire my first Leica. This seems the best place to introduce you to my M2 with a couple of Elma collapsible lenses for starters, the 50 f3.5 and the 90 f4. Lovely walk-a-round kit and although I've only fired and developed a couple of rolls, I'm smitten.

Beautiful examples, and I am pleased to see those keyring straps have not been used.  The originals are no longer available whereby Leica uses modern stainless steel eyelets.  I have found nylon blind-cord to solve the problem:

I own a 3f, M2 and recently purchased a mint black chrome M4.  I go back and forth between the elegance of the M2 finder and the more modern features of the M4 (can easily live with the 135 frame lines appearing with the 35 since they are so small.  I have been touring the national parks in Arizona and Utah for the past couple weeks and since I am traveling by car, I brought everything.

I prefer the film loading of the M4 over the M2 but after using the 3f a bit more I will never complain about the film loading on the M2 again.  My god the 3f is a pain in the a** to load.  If they is even a minor crinkle in the film, forget it.  I have learned to just cut that portion off and cut a new leader!

OK, rant over.  Happy Holidays everyone!  I love that daylight is getting longer.  Heading to Anchorage next month and daylight there is increasing 5-7 minutes per day.

Note that some M2s (M2Rs and KS15-4s which are the military versions of the M2Rs -- or vice versas really) have the same quick load system as the m4s. Yup, the standard M2 is a cinch compared to the 3fs (I have one of those too). Truthfully I havenj't used the 3f in a while even though I got the rangefinder prism resilvered so that you can actually focus effectively now! Imagine. Yes for the 3f you really need to cut a long thin leader (I have the leader template you can use to just cut it quickly). Even so, the Ms are every so much easier.

Merry Christmas!

Dear ktmrider2,  I suggest you buy an ABLON. I have four "schraubgewinde" and with the template have never had the slightest problem loading film.

The truth is that the 3f requires a lot of practice to load well, and it's still harder than the Ms, but you can get good at it. By the time I bought a 3f I already had an M so I did try to practice and it seemed to get easier but I never really used the camera a lot. If I had had one when I was first starting out in the early 70s, that would have been one thing. What I actually had was a Konica I which had a fixed lens, but a very good one.

Cheers - it's my most used film M.

You should have Leica borrow and 3D scan your M2 and then release the "Colint544 Edition" ....................
