Just my uneducated opinion here, but I think Leica have packed too much into the camera and when several functions are operating at the same time (the main culprit being LiveView) the heat buildup in the camera causes a shutdown.

I don't think the problem is heat dissipation as I have had the camera regularly freeze at ambient temperatures below 0 without heavy use

1. As you point out you don't even have one 2. This is definitely nothing to do with heat as it's most commons seconds after startup from cold and I never use live view (no idea where you got this from) 3. It's not very often in my case but definitely annoying that it happens at all 4. My perspective (as I live in a country with 6 years for a consumer claim) is I'd rather have the camera and work to get it sorted than not have it at all although if never fixed that is not acceptable 5. I am an amateur so can be sanguine/patient about the issue.

As I said at the beginning of my comment, I was offering an "uneducated opinion." The idea did not originate with me. It came from another forum member who is a highly regarded software engineer with a long record here. However, since you know heat "definitely" does not cause the problem, I'm sure Leica engineers would enjoy hearing from you so they can officially rule it out.

As to your point 3, it doesn't need to happen very often. If it happens once with a very important shot, that's enough. A studio photographer explained in a post a few weeks ago that his new M11M froze a few times during a session, causing him to revert to another system. He returned the camera soon after and will not repurchase one.

On point 4, having one in no way contributes to a solution. That seems a rather absurd notion. If anything, when customers continue to knowingly purchase a faulty product, it would seem to me the company would have less motivation to fix it.

Cheers!

Shirokurome,  First, welcome to the forum.  Its a great place to get advice from many experienced and knowledgeable Leica photographers who will offer sage advice to include myself. Second, I sent you a PM to help you with the M11 odyssey...I think it will help you a lot.   r/ Mark

When you ask for a new replacement, choose a camera with firmware 1.6.1 in the store, then there will be fewer problems

Thank you Smogg. Unfortunately where I purchased the camera (Tokyo, Japan), this is not an option as the staff update the firmware as the stock arrive...Also since I already replaced it once, they cannot replace it again and it will be a warranty fix and I don't want to be without my camera for an extended period as I have to travel to Europe. Despite the random freezing issues, I do love the M11M, my first ever Monochrom camera and I love the images that it has produced in the limited time ive had with the camera. Its the first time Im always reaching for the camera whenever I leave home. Since I'm not a professional I guess the freezing doesn't affect my career so to speak and therefore I can somewhat swallow the inconvenience, although I am cautiously optimistic that Leica will fix this issue with another FW update.

Thank you Mark. I am going through your message right now. Thank you for the warm welcome.

Today my camera behaved perfectly on a walk, whereas on the previous two walks it was a real nightmare with freezing. Before today's walk, I did Reset and restored all the settings manually, rather than from the profile. Maybe this is a necessary periodic procedure?🤷‍♂️

when the new firmware  will  be released to save the reputation and end this thread?

Last time I chatted with a fellow Leica sub-reddit redditor he wrote that he will receive a beta version of the newest firmware. He had M11 and M11-P cameras with freezing issues.

It is my belief, based upon few facts and therefore should be given little credence by others, that a multitude of software errors are solved by blowing away all saved configuration settings and re-configuring from scratch.  The errors that are resolved by doing so are the errors that show up after new software is loaded.  This belief pertains to software in general, not specifically to the firmware in the M11.

It is the bane of software developers because we tend to start testing from an initial (known) state to get reproducible results.

May you have many more trouble free day with your M11.

Most likely 30 days prior to release of the M12.

You're being optimistic 😉 The last bug fix of the M240 has been released in Nov. 2017 (fw 2.0.5.0)  i.e. 10 months after the launch of the M10. Every good thing comes in due time 😄

I suspect the only effective firmware update will be to disable, either permanently or optionally, the mix of functions that are overwhelming the processor.  The alternative would be replacing the processor and a lot besides abd completely rewriting the firmware.  That isn’t going to happen.

Long awaited press release from Leica acknowledging the problem:

“A small minority of M11 series owners (a handful really - not a widespread issue) have had problems with freezing, bricking and corrupt files. As a gesture of goodwill, Leica will offer an upgrade to the new M12 to those owners of affected cameras.”

Where’s the popcorn …

Now I know why the black steel rim is so "cheap" :) - The costs have to come in somewhere ...

Where did the statement appear?

Second question, is there a general feeling here that these problems only affect a "small minority of M11 series owners?"

I believe that was sarcasm (i.e. Leica will try and minimize that there's any real problem, as they have done in the past).
