For sure not every image result is pleasing, just as you described it. Sometimes, when I shoot landscape, I take two images, one fully open and one stopped down. Often I love the stopped down version much more, but sometimes I don`t. It depends. But the good thing is, that I only need one lens to produce different results.

This image was taken with the new Steel Rim, stopped down. Not sure, it it was f/4 or f/5,6. It`s shot right into the sun. No CA, nothing. I wonder, if the results of a modern Summicron would be any better.

A big advantage of pre-asph besides being a dual lens (dreamy wide open & sharp closed down) definitely are no CA & no distortion.

Modern lenses win in flare surpression &  they are better suited if you 'need' to shoot wide open a wide variety of things with higher performance.

Both have pros & cons, both have their fans. I'm all for pre asph lenses but if photography was my work I'd prob get one pre asph & one asph depending on the assignment.

It’s not the focus tab that is the issue, it’s the infinity lock that is associated therewith. The infinity lock actuator/ lever is attached to, or housed by the focus tab. You depress the infinity lock lever to release the infinity lock, so you can rotate the focus ring away from the lock position at infinity.

On the old version, it is a vey elegant crescent shape, clearly designed for a fingertip, dovetailed into the focus lever, and it has a very smooth, damped action.

On the new version, it is more squared off, and feels looser, less precisely fitted.

‘Admittedly, it is a subtle difference, but it was immediately apparent to me upon handling the lens.

My reissue finally arrived, I can post a side-by-side of the infinity lock mechanisms. Left is reissue, right is an original, M3 version.

The 35 mm f 1,4 (not the steel rim, a later version) was my second Leica lens (after a 90 mm Elmarit). When I see these photos I know why I sold it for a Summicron Asph. Modern lenses have great benefits. I like the look of a modern lens much more than the glow and the unsharpness of the older ones. But this is all a matter of taste.

Concerning IQ, I agree @elmars. However, I like sometimes to play with older design very classic optical approaches (sorry I use the Zeiss terminology :Tessar, Sonnar, Planar).

For me, It's more an "engineer" interest. As an example : when the Apo50m was launched, I compare it with a Summicron from 1958. Where are the differences etc.

Older lenses makes sens in special situation, typically "weeding" or "portrait" photography with an homeopathic approach

I would love to compare these images in full resolution. The v3 appear slightly more contrasty. I see more purple fringing on v3 though... Nice composition. C

Thank you. The v3 new image is either sharper or focus is better (on the people sitting in the grass). Less glow around the white sweater as well.

The V3 image was taken with the M11 at 36 MP resolution, the other one with the M10-R. I would say, that the M11 images are more contrasty in general as well as the images taken with the new V3.

Don't know, what you like to see. I'm not sure, if more images would be of any help. Keep in mind, that the V3 is more contrasty in general and a little bit sharper wide open than it's predecessor. Glow is almost similar. Stopped down images are very sharp.

Everything up to about 8-10 feet looks good. The background farther out look like hammered guano.

No idea if this has been published before but over at another forum there was a side-by-side comparison done the proper way (in the field) between Leica 35/1.4 Summilux Steel rim 2022 re-issue vs. Voigtlander 35/1.4 Nokton II SC.
The results are stunning. If you smack a 1/4 promist filter or a gentle Tiffen Glimmerglass/Soft FX on the Voight YOU VIRTUALLY GET THE STEEL RIM for just a few hundred credits (insert euros/dollars/pounds at will).

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1779165/4

A conclusion which will have zero impact on Leica's sales, or on the demand for original steel rims.🙂

Hey, calm down - my remark was light-hearted (see the emoji) - I'm sorry if it didn't come across that way. I have no issue with your post; my comment was about market fashions.
