Of course.  But I called myself an alien here, because I'm not a typical Leica user.  I would never have been able to buy a Leica camera if it had not been for a lucky event a few years ago.  And then I let my dream of such a camera come true.

My own path to Leica ownership was similar.  My first Leica was a film MP with a 50 Summilux back in 2003.

Then when I decided to get my M240 - my first ever digital camera, I traded in all my accumulated Nikon kit to help pay for it.  It was a little unnerving to pack up my hard won Nikon gear and ship it off, but I did.  And I have never regretted it.

My Leica gear fulfils two needs/passions

a) photography as such

b) handling engineering master pieces.

I currently have following focal lengths:

21, 28, 35, 50*2, 75*2, 135

Only half of them I bought as new to make the whole effort more reasonable. Those were the 28, 50*2, 75. I could reduce the whole kit to 28, 50 or more likely to 28, 75 to cover all my needs and be without any remorse.

We are all lucky here to be able to afford (more or less ;) ) such gear.

I forgot to mention 21*2, both Voigtlanders.  The first, 21/1.8, I got when first getting into Leica with the M10 in 2017.  Since then they made a 21/1.4 and I got that then.  Apparently not using either much...

I forgot my Elmar 135mm f/4, from 1961. So revised list:

21 (1)

28 (2)

35 (1)

50 (8)

90 (2)

135 (2)

They span from the early 1950's through to 2021... haven't got around to adding anything this year 😀

a smaller bank account balance.

If you see that in a few years time the Summilux75 went from 2500 to 3500€, an M4 from 600 to 1100€, it’s quite useless to keep your money at the bank.

Well, if anything, we see that 50mm is the dominant focal distance.  Even @Steven can't sway that with all his 35s!:)

50mm takes the lead indeed by a large margin.  Here is the updated list :

  1. 50mm (147)
  2. 35mm (85)
  3. 90mm (58)
  4. 28mm (54)
  5. 21mm (36)

Average 9,1 lenses per member.

(update) Also interesting :

  • Of all members indicating they have a 50mm lens 60% have more than one.
  • For the 35mm only 32% of members having this focal length do have multiple 35's.  The same 32% applies for the 90mm.

Interesting info !  So the 50 v 35 question is finally solved, right ? 🤣

I should add in quantities as my post is too late to change:

35 x 2

50 x 5

90 x 1

But 35 is my favourite. What is it about these damn 50s ... they are too nifty
