Advertisement Posted February 6, 2022 Posted February 6, 2022 Hi Bonato, Take a look here The 50mm f/1,2 Noctilux Image Thread. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jon Warwick Posted February 16, 2022 Share #322 Posted February 16, 2022 (edited) I have been looking for a lens with "character", and have to say I like many of the images here that you've all taken. I'm curious about the lens, because I find the high contrast and super resolving lenses (like the M and SL APOs) to be far too "sharp" on a digital camera for Portraits. When I look at the images produced here, I was wondering what other lenses might provide a rendering similar to this reissued Noctilux 1.2? For example, has anyone compared it to the Voigtlander 50mm Heliar Classic f 1.5 (or other lens that you might think is comparable)? ....or would you say the Noctilux 1.2's output really is quite unique and/or provides benefits like above-average micro-contrast etc? You mean more "dreamy"? (=uncorrected aberrations, nice bokeh, sharpness falloff from the centre, etc.) You should definitely check the "modern" fast Sonnar formulas. Like the 7artisans 50mm f/1.1 (bonus: super cheap). Or if you don't mind a stop slower, the f/1.5 Sonnars, either the original (and Jupiter-3 clones+modern reissues), or the new one reintroduced by Zeiss (bonus: small size).

Yes, “dreamy” is exactly what I mean! Thanks for your suggestions, including the heads-up about the reintroduced Zeiss, I’d never seen it before and will take a look. The jupiter-3 also got reintroduced as "Jupiter 3+", but I don't think it's worth the price given how cheap the original can be found. Another thing you might wanna try, that is comparatively really cheap and can give great "dreamy" results on demand, is a filter. You can check the Pro Mists and other haze filters in various intensities, or my favourite in terms of "dreaminess" of results, the Zeiss Softar (3 grades iirc) / Hoya Softener (A and B ), with small droplet sized "lenses" on it, that difracts light and gives a bit of a soft focus effect (not just haze).

Herr Barnack Posted June 10, 2022 Share #339 Posted June 10, 2022 On 2/5/2022 at 9:28 PM, adan said: Actually, what Leica (Well, the Reddot Forum of Leica Store Miami) says is: To maintain the unmistakable, dreamlike rendering of the original lens and its hallmark bokeh, Leica strictly adhered to the historical optical calculation and construction, making only minimal changes when carefully adapting to the glass types and production methods available today. The re-issue still contains six elements in four groups with two aspherical lenses, all housed in a relatively compact package with a standard 49mm front filter thread. And according to Leica, performance is almost identical to the 1960s version. Interesting. I have the f/1.0 Noctilux (#11-822) and I'm beginning to prefer the rendering of the new copies of the "older" 50mm f/1.2 Noctilux to my more recent version. In some of the images I'm seeing in this thread, the f/1.2 shot when wide open produces in focus areas that are more sharp than my f/1.0 produces wide open. I think that difference in sharpness is what's attractive about the f/1.2 lens.
