In which Koolhaas started the movement into the skies, several decades ago, with groundbreaking studies for the city. So it is appropriate that he dominates the skyline.

Visitors to Amsterdam will normally stay in the historic center, canals, 17th Century houses, souvenir shops, the lot. However, they don't realize that the city expanded over the centuries in bursts of building, a bit like the layers of an onion. Walking from the centre to the outskirts you will walk from century to century - architecturally speaking - and find some very interesting things.  My favourite Onion layer is the area near the Concertgebouw, the "Painters" area, so called as the streets are named after painters.

Early 20th Century, Jugendstil and early "Amsterdamsche School" (culminating in Berlage, of course)
