In my opinion [it is about opinions and views here], both Mandler and Karbe are/were geniuses of lens designs at Leica. It is not really how one lens is better than the other as it depends on the photographer's taste and needs in specific situations which lens she/he wants to use. I have always liked the old Leica lenses (and old Zeiss lenses), and I tried to stay away from ASPH lenses. I happen to like using a 75mm 1.4 Summilux (pre-asph). Is it perfect? What is perfection in photography?  I have met Peter Karbe in Wetzlar, and he seems to be an enthusiastic Leica lens designer. He gave us a talk about all Leica lenses. His talk lasted more than 80 minutes.

Leica M9, 35 Summilux ASPH FLE.

I don't have the M9 any more, but it converted to mono better than any other colour digital camera I've had.

Hi Raid,

I hope you didn't get the impression that the aim of this thread is to compare Mandler and Karbe lenses. As you say they are both Masters of lens design. For me, the goal is to simply showcase the Karbe lenses in much the same way that the Mandler lens thread does for those lenses. My hope is that not only do we get to show off some of our work, but that this thread grows and becomes a visual repository for others who may be interested in acquiring a particular Karbe era lens.

Good question re everglades.  I think that is roof color.  I've never ever had issues with color distortion with the summicron.  Its am pretty faithful lens for me.

I examined the photo again and usually zinc plated steel roof is of grey color... Edge part of the roof on your photo is grey. I doubt they designed grey and violet roof parts...

Maybe it is just me, but it is not the first time I notice violet/magenta colors in (corrected) shadows on photos from M10R. Never noticed similar behaviour on M10/M10P posted photos... Again maybe is just my (wrong) observation.🤔

I agree with what you have said above. Both men are geniuses. Leica gained a lot by having Mandler and then Karbe.
