Another example: Picture taken with the 50mm APO Summicron at f:2.0.  What you see is my favourite 50mm Mandler lens, the Summilux V2 on the Monochrom.

Your SEM BW photos are marvelous!!! Very very inspiring. Great composition, contrast, rendering. And those dramatic clouds and at the same time sparkling whites in the field and on water... Great!

Do you guys compete with each other who will show better SEM Monochrome photo?😁

Both are great. White shining doors and thoughtful lines. Simple and stunning.

More I see SEM photos, more I love it. It has a very strong but unique character. Does make sense to buy a brand new CV 21/3.5 ASPH ($700), start to shoot and practice with the 21mm, then later in the future, upgrade to a SEM. Or option 2. I don't buy it, and save the $700 for a sooner SEM 🙂

Very 3d... Looking at your photo, I feel good and I want myself go there and shoot 🙂 Thank you!

Leica M5. 35 Summilux ASPH FLE, Ilford HP5 rated @ 800 ISO

Wide open? It could easily confused with a 50mm ... Absolutely amazing OoF

I always understand more about it. When people say has to pick one lens only, they choose 35 FLE

Thank you for this thread...

Cheers, Dennis. That building in the background is the Glasgow transport museum, it's very tall, and I wouldn't have been able to fit it in on a 50 from where I took that shot. And sorry, yes, that was shot wide open at 1.4.

I'm always reading that the 35 Summilux ASPH FLE has a sterile, boring character to it, but I can't say I've really found that. I think it really comes alive though, when shot on film. I saw somewhere on this forum that someone - can't remember who - likes to shoot modern aspherical Leica lenses on a film M, and vintage lenses on a digital M, and I'm sure they're onto something there..

Dennis,

Get the SEM because its character motivates you to master the 21 mm view and discover your specific style. Its ergonomics and rendering join into its magic.

Leica M5, with the 50mm Summilux ASPH black chrome edition, and Ilford FP4. Shot wide open at 1.4.

Fine-grained film with a modern aspherical lens captures a lot of detail
