I refuse to believe the advance lever is just a "thumb support" as many people suggested

A thumb "support" implies that the lever is non-actionable, fixed at its particular angle (otherwise you will have stability issues)

Now if we go by the photos Leica Rumors released, the advance lever, just as any film m, barely protrudes outside of the edge of top plate when "closed"

If that's the case, what additional "support" does it provide? Your thumb won't even touch it most of the time (unless you are holding the camera wrong)!

This would make the lever purely decorative. I know the current owner of Leica (everybody's favorite hedge fund ) loves milking money with hundreds of limited editions but this is dense even for them.

For 2 days I start thinking what this lever could be, and than I start thinking like the one who would design the camera than I remembered Fuji x100 and the small lever in the front that make you switch between OVF and EVF only this lever in M camera is used for frame selector...

so its simple as this:

THE LEVER IS TO ACTIVATE LIVE VIEW WHEN USING EVF

MARK MY WORD.

this is the only explanation and small button on the side to control features of EVF like focus peaking etc.

so if you pull it once you activate EVF if the external EVF is attached and again to switch it off, think about it you have your EVF attached but you don't want to use it all the time not to consume battery thats the only explanation.

by the way this is the perfect M if it goes how I predicted it

...but i am still in love with the idea of being able to choose between a manual and electrical rewinding of the shutter

very hard I thought about it but honestly I don't think Leica would do that.

Then again, maybe the small button, when held down for five seconds or whatever, toggles the EVF on and off.  Must wait until next week.

thats not Leica at all maybe Sony would do it this way, but Leica they think and  give extra thought for fast ergonomic control, think about it, you have your EVF attached on your camera, you are in the street there is this moment that you need your EVF to capture it so you want fast action pulling a lever and putting your eyes on EVF is faster and more practical than pressing for 5 sec, another thought since there is only one button maybe 2 another one in the front you want to make maximum use out of it.....

so maybe pressing for 5 sec will give you some feature in EVF like showing Histogram..... etc

When I read your description I suddenly got an crazy idea: Why don't they keep it simple? They could just put a display on the rear side...

All I can say is that I have my M-D and this thing, whatever it might be, is nothing I would buy.

I look forward to seeing what Leica actually produce as an "M10-D". I'll likely not be motivated to buy it anyway... The M-D, just as it is, is that good.

of course, its depend how you work otherwise there wouldn't be so many models of camera in each company if there is one perfect camera for everybody

I'm still waiting for any company to build a perfect camera, although the FM2 or the MP come close 🙂

last year this time I was so close buying the M-D and up to last min placing an order I am choosing between M-D and M10, lets face it shooting Leica is all about having the fun of manual control, but I needed only one camera to travel with as I travel a lot and that time M-D offer the fun but will miss features when I am shooting and need to see the picture on location and EVF when it really needed, thats why I went with the M10

now this camera offer both in one body with EVF and WIFI tethering thats every thing I can ask for.....

I hope Leica did right this time will wait and see

If the advance lever is for cocking the shutter... this camera is WONDERFUL. A piece of art and a perfect design. The best M digital camera, and a landmark in the Leica tradition.

A manual activation of the shutter saves battery and makes, probably, an almost silent actuation.

The same as the one we got on some film Ms (double stroke) or the R-D1 i guess.Worked fine for me.

Of course if one is using a Visoflex, the so-called advance turns into a two-stroke process which was given up on the M3 decades ago.

Or a one short stroke process as on the R-D1 but the Visoflex wouldn't change anything then.

Manually cocking the shutter takes little energy and definitely compromises Visoflex use. Silent? Which makes more noise, cocking or activation. Do you know?
