Missed chances on the CL

Recommended Posts

I'm waiting for mine, but I already know of two things I'll miss on the CL: 4K burst shooting and post-focus.

4 K burst shooting will deliver 8 MB full-res JPGs @ 30 fps, with the burst starting a second before you press the shutter.

Post-focus will shoot a short burst whilst operating the AF. Thus one can choose the plane of focus in the computer.

I think those are useful and non-gimmick developments of 4K Video. As the camera is clearly aimed at the casual, non-professional Video user (no mic port, no HDMI port either) it would have been reasonable to expect 4K to serve the stills photographer.

simple menus system

That I really agree with as well. One needs to be able to operate a camera without taking it down from the eye. The button/wheels on the top are a good start, but now simplify the presets.

And, of course, IBIS, a  really good one by Panasonic, please.

Weather sealing, eliminating cheap battery door. And a joystick for back button focusing. In other words, closer to a mini SL.

Why don´t you buy a SL when you would like to have the features of a SL ?

Who said I won't? Smaller travel or backup option. Not mutually exclusive. Would be nice if TL lenses were sealed, too.

I feel that the most complaints come from people who want to have the CL not as their 1st camera, but as their second or third body. If you would fulfill every wish of them, it would be a totally different cam. I´m glad that the CL is like it is. Some minor improvements will surely come in the future.

But to post that above under the title "missed chances on the CL" is in my opinion much too exorbitant.

I don't think it is exorbitant - if one implements 4K without making the camera interesting for Video professionals, the least one can do is to apply the technology to the stills side - especially as it can be "hidden" in the menu. Otherwise 4 K doesn't make sense.

IBIS is more or less standard on most if not all all cameras in this class. Panasonic is a technological frontrunner in this respect. Why not profit from it? The usability of a 24 MP APS-C sensor can only be enhanced this way.

But you posted too under 'missed chances' even though you like it as is. Room for all opinions, methinks.

Time will tell if it was a missed chance for Leica.

The ISIS or lenses with stabilizer may be ok if it doesn´t make the CL larger.

But is a battery door, weather sealing or a joystick really a missing chance?

Well if weather sealing implies more bulk or weight i'm not interested at all, let alone that i only use M lenses on the CL. I don't need a joystick either, the two wheels of the CL work fine for me. As for the plastic battery/card door i would have preferred magnesium of course. That of my old Digilux 1 is in magnesium IIRC. Now as a japanese cameras user i would not break the deal for that. IBIS yes i would like it but again not at the cost of more bulk or weight. YMMV.

Leica lenses, which offer image stabilization, can be used without any restriction on the CL

The SL lenses are big and defeat the purpose of a smaller camera, camera stabilisation is more efficient and pretty much the norm in cameras especially in this price range.

You want cool advanced stuff like pre shooting and post focus when Leica won't even implement simple functions which are regularly requested. Good luck with that.

Missed:

* mandatory long exposure noise reduction.

* ridiculously short maximum exposure times.

* IS lenses.

* allow touch control of menu items. also could have had the TL menus.

* M10 like back and menu but the play button is in a different spot??

* joystick instead of the less useful pad. Or a virtual joystick on the rear screen ala Olympus.

* a fast portrait prime.

* a super compact 35mm (50 equiv).

I'm less worried about special functions like the ones you mention because they're subjective. Personally I'd rather have Olympus' live exposure preview over the two you mention. I know how to focus and I never shoot jpegs.

And where is Dual IS with stabilized lenses?

If the CL were my 1st camera, I would demand much more out of it, starting with a better selection of glass.

As it stands though, it serves as my 4th camera and thus I'm more lenient of it's lack of features.

The battery door is another one of those... The mechanism on the S, SL and TL2 works really well IMO.  You are like... why... why on earth why?  Why the UI from the 2000s?  Why the buttons instead of the joystick? etc etc etc

Because some users don't like joysticks and smartphone interfaces i guess. At least this user does not so the first thing i did when the T was launched was to buy a Fuji X-E2 instead which was the predecessor to the CL sort of. Aside from the lack of thumb rest, the ergonomics of the little CL look well thought out to be honest so kudos to Leica for that.
