Can you post a pick with one on your 50 black chrome specifically? I’m assuming you purchased to use a hood and filter. I have the lens and would like to see what it looks like.

Quite. I can't imagine myself spending such an amount of money on something that I can get for a few dollars on eBay in very similar quality. Plus, my cameras get used and the hoods take the brunt of wear and tear. I would hate to put  a patina on such a stack of money. Leica is bad enough in this respect. My Summilux 24 hood is scratched and dinged all over, but I refuse to renew it.

Since my original post I was successfully able to order and receive TVO lens hoods for both my 50 Lux BC and 20 Elmarit. I have attached 2 photos of one mounted on my 50 Lux BC.

I picked up a couple of his 39mm thread mount hoods because they have 46mm filter threads!  Expensive, yes.  But I do tend to use them with my Summicron 40, 50, Elmarit 28, and Ultron 35.  So the advantage for me is that I haven’t had to buy any 39mm color filters for my Monochrom.  That alone justified the price for me. And yes, I know I could have just picked up some cheap step-up rings to only carry one diameter filter, but that would have negated the ability to use a hood.
I doubt I will ever buy any more though.

I purchased a Ventilated Shade for my 28mm Summilux lens on June 12. On June 17th I received notice it was being shipped (from HK) and it arrived by FedEx a couple of days later. It came in a nice presentation and fits my lens perfectly.

I don't mind the standard Leica hood that came with my lens, but I thought I'd give the Venitlated shade a try anyway.

Ha, probably deserved that! 😀

Thankfully no animal skin. Just a nice, neat presentation. I only mentioned my order because others had said they had problems receiving theirs.

The truth is, after being cooped mostly inside since March I was having terrible GAS. I found myself being convinced I needed to get into the S system (used of course) or buy new M and SL lenses. Buying a ventilated shade seems to have cooled off that thinking for now. So by that measurement it was not expensive.

I do prefer the compact size of the original 28mm Summilux hood so time will tell if I do switch over to the ventilated hood.

I’ve stuck with the standard hood on my 28 Summilux.  Curiously, I like the hoods that came with my 28 Summaron, 35 Summilux pre-asph and 50 APO Summicron.  I did get a Thorsten von Overpriced hood for my 35 Summilux-TL - the standard one was huge.  The TvO hood is smaller, but a bit ... odd.

I like the TO 28 hood. It has less (as good as none) viewfinder blockage than the original Leica hood.

The TO 50 hood is lighter and smaller than the original Leica hood.

The TO hoods allow to use filters without adding to the size of lens and hood.

It's your choice, but with a hood, I would not use an UV filter also. I find that the shade protects the glass of the lens pretty well; and also UV filter glass is less resistent to scratches than the front glass of the lens. Without UV filter, the lens looks nicer, I think. The few times where I have had front glass scratched, Leica were able to replace or polish it relatively inexpensive.

You have the option to add ND or colored filters on the front of the hood, either original filter size (via the adapter it comes with), or a larger filter size that fits onto the hood without any adapters. I do that for all my ND filters and then never have to remove any hood.

(For the hoods with outside screw, the original lens thread is still available for filters without adding length to the lens, like the Leica Q, 28/1.4, 28/2.8 and so on).

Of course I meant for my 28 Elmarit......"fat fingered" and typed 20 Elmarit.

The Overgaard hoods are bullshit. I tried one for my Summilux-M 35 mm Asph; it didn't fit the lens's threads. I returned it and never received my refund. Avoid them. Better get a generic ventilated hood from Hong-Kong.

Throsten customer service is between terrible and atrocious.  I didn’t get my product for six weeks and getting a refund was like pulling teeth.

Yes, and you are going to get those cheap hoods in a few days instead of waiting 6 months. Non-sense at all.

Do not pull your teeth because of Thorsten.

He is a Danish Photographer, travels the world, takes photographs and teaches photography.

Teach him how to set up customer service.

I feel dumbfounded; why on earth do Leica users pay substantially higher for quality and are willing to accept substandard after market products and customer service (this includes wait times).
