Any idea which lens would be most suited? Elmarit 21 ASPH seems to be the best choice?

I'm wondering whether there is any information available which parameters are actually affected (one or more and which of vignetting, distortion, color cast,...) by the respective lens profiles on the respective camera type or whether this is Leica's secret.

For instance the following website lists some profiles, but does not seem to shed light on the aforesaid question: https://lavidaleica.com/content/leica-lens-codes

You can experiment by using manual selection.

I know there are already a few threads which briefly touch on this lens, but I want to know: What do you think about the little 21mm f/4 Voigtländer?

Back to the OP...

I bought he 1st iteration CV 21mm f4 in ltm when it was announced.  I bought it as a small and lightweight option for  backpacking the Pennine Way.  Small and light is about the only positive thing I remember the lens for. Contrast somewhat masks the fact it isn't a razor, but, oh dear, it's ability to flare is a real pita.

When I finished the Pennine Way and saw how many Velvia images I had lost because of that lens, I got rid of it.  Fast.

If you browse the topic you will see that most have had the best results with 11134.

Indeed, Elmarit 21 pre ASPH seems to work best. Just tested several alternatives, including Elmarit 21 ASPH.

Pre ASPH is also easier to code, as you only have to paint the outermost right bit... 😉  I do not see any magenta edges anymore with said coding.

It is not an easy lens on digital. I have to increase exposure compensation (+2/3 if not more) to get rid of this defect.

A really really nice lens but it ain't no Leica Super-Elmar-M 21 f/3.4 ASPH.

Of course it's not.

But you wouldn't expect it to be, given that it's only 15% of the cost of the Super Elmar.

I use this lens on my M-P typ 240 and I don't find using any preset lenses help take away the red edges...so called Italian flag.

I am further disappointed having just moved to Lightroom Classic (paid subscription), Adobe Flat Field Correction does not work properly...used to work flawlessly in my past Lightroom version 6.24. Now it won't keep the original DNG file in Lightroom... I have to futz around finding it on the hard drive and force it back into the Lightroom Classic catalogue.

Flat Field correction used to work easily and perfectly for wide angle lenses for me in my cheaper stand-alone Lightroom.  Now have the pleasure of paying Adobe a fee close to $200 Aus per annum, to have this feature with a big bug.

This lens is excellent on an M8 camera with a 39mm UV/IR filter. Gives the equivalence of a 28mm lens view.

Because the sensor crops the field of view of the lens, it takes away the soft edges and Italian Flag problem...it has quite some pop on an M8.

Indeed, i did no need any correction in PP for snaps like these (M8.2). Now better avoid shooting into the light with the Skopar 21/4, unless flare is the photog's cup of tea.

I think hardly anything beats this lens paired with Summicron-C 40/2 for travel regarding BOTH size and IQ.

+1 at f/2. At f/2.8 and above, there are some rare or more expensive contenders: Elmarit-C 40/2.8, Macro-Elmar 90/4 to name a few, besides non-Leica lenses.

It seems nothing has changed on the above version from the original ltm version I had and hated.  The random magenta blobs of flare and mediocre resolution are not something I could live with.  I definitely do not share your enthusiasm for it, but good luck with it anyway

As far as my M-mount copy is concerned, vignetting is moderate compared to S-A 21/3.4 or Biogon 21/4.5, and the Skopar 21/4 is only softer at full aperture. It has more distortion though but it is easy to adjust in PP. Main issues are flare and color shifts (red edge) on M240 and, supposedly, M9 (no experience with it). Those issues are mostly addressed on the later Skopar 21/3.5 but it suffers from color fringing contrary to the 21/4 version.

I think it's brilliant on my M246M ;), can't beat the size and for my use sharp enough.

I don't have a colour Leica but on my Sony's it indeed shows some colour shift towards purple in the corners, but nothing that a bit of simple PP can't solve. And from everything I've read its performance on colour Leica's is better than on Sony's. Other than that I find the rendering and colours it produces very nice.

If you are looking for an UWA travel lens to accompany your tiny M arsenal (Summaron 28/5.6, Elmarit 28mm/2.8 ASPH, Color Skopar 35/2.5, Summilux 35 pre-asph, Summaron 35/2.8, Summicron-C 40/2, Nokton 40/1.4, Elmar 50/2.8 collapsible) this is the one!

Thanks a lot for your replies! Indeed, I have a special liking for tiny lenses, and am looking to build up a set with several of those you mention here... (considering the two 28s and the 40s as well...).

I got mine few years ago. Only recently figured out how to deal with magenta corners. It is not present if I set auto exposure metering with +1 compensation.

On M-E 220, mine is LTM with its "hood":
