Marac Posted July 1, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 1, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am (was) a Noctilux virgin. Always desired one never able to afford one.... UNTIL NOW! I had a moment of madness after selling my (heave to lug around) PhaseOne kit and then without any consideration to the environment put the lot down on this minty baby from 1977. I am very excited. My DREEEEAM combination was to own a Leica M Monochrome with a Noctilux on the front of it. Dream come true. I have been using a Canon LTM 50mm f1.2 and it has been a very good servant and given me some great images. I'm not sure I will sell it because I am hoping they will produce very different images, but, between you & I, I am extremely happy and consider myself exceptionally fortunate to be able to own such an amazing set.. I will post some photos at some point when my heart rate slows down a bit. I do most of my photo posting at http://www.500px.com/leicam I guess everyone has a Noctilux story at some point in their life. I remember the very first time I saw one and used it and thought then, I would love to get one one day. Added some photos of the lens, I do also have the hood but no box. I think it is in AMAZING condition for a 1977 lens, I think the previous owner took very good care of it and I hope to do the same.. it will get A LOT of use now I own it but I will also respect the condition and value of it. Advertisement Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Hi Marac, Take a look here Noctilux f1 E58 my first time. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
IWC Doppel Posted July 1, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 1, 2015 Use it and get to know it, it's remarkable in low light. In a way that pushing ISO can't really match IMO I'm looking to add an MM to my E60 Noctilux with detachable hood. My 'surprise' was colour density and in B&W's case tonality in low light. Great lens :-)
Winedemonium Posted July 1, 2015 Share #3 Posted July 1, 2015 All the best with this Marac. It's a special lens. I used to have an E60 type III, but I think the next time around will be the type I, E58. Your one is unusually mint. Have fun!
Marac Posted July 1, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted July 1, 2015 Yes the condition is amazing when I consider its 1977. I have a moody band rehearsal tonight so I might try to get a few shots with it, apparently it can see in the dark ...
IWC Doppel Posted July 1, 2015 Share #5 Posted July 1, 2015 Getting a Nocti is one of those seminal moments :-)
Marac Posted July 2, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted July 2, 2015 After having it a couple of days and simply using it around the house and yard I can honestly say, with hand on heart, I'M IN LOVE! this is a brilliant combination and I am very excited to go out and shoot with it properly soon. bocaburger Posted July 4, 2015 Share #9 Posted July 4, 2015 See, my eye is immediately drawn to the OOF fingers of her right hand, and the printing on that side of the placard. It is that razor-thin DOF that has always kept me from getting a Noctilux (I had the chance to get a mint e60 w/hood pins about 10 yrs ago for $1600). I have a difficult enough time with my Summilux wide open, and even sometimes with the Cron. I can do it better with an SLR, but with the M, even with LV and the EVF, I mess up half the time
jrp Posted July 4, 2015 Share #10 Posted July 4, 2015 Razor thin DoF can be useful when you need to remove distracting detail but, as this photo illustrates, is counter-productive when it removes relevant detail. Focusing on the placard at f/2.8 or f/4 might have done it, but being able to figure that out on the fly without using LiveView takes experience beyond mine.
Marac Posted July 4, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted July 4, 2015 I was focussing on her face funny enough.
jrp Posted July 4, 2015 Share #12 Posted July 4, 2015 Obv. As anyone else with a normal lens would have done. But turns out to be the wrong answer. As I say, focusing on the placard and stopping down would have been better.
Marac Posted July 4, 2015 Author Share #13 Posted July 4, 2015 Well personally I prefer the shallow DOF & as you are aware it all a matter of personal preference, I do not think either is wrong, just different..
Marac Posted July 4, 2015 Author Share #14 Posted July 4, 2015 Sorry maybe I should of made it clear.. These shots are only snaps to show the thing at f1 so I had no intention of making this an image I would keep or print..
