It is worth noting that there is also a stunning German made 35 - 70 2,8 zoom but few copies exist and fewer are available...

The 35 - 70 f4 was intended to be an 'entry' lens for the R system but performance is very adequate for most purposes.

If monster lenses ;) are not your cup of tea, the Vario-Elmar-R 35-70/4 (# 11277) has almost the same length and weight as a Summicron-M 90/2. Still bulky of course but bearable for those who like zooms. The 35-70/4 is significantly sharper than the Vario-Elmar-R 35-70/3.5 (# 11248).

35-70/4 technical data

E. Puts - 35-70

A. Nemeth - 28/35-70

You're right but kept out of the discussion on purpose: <1800 produced, weight over 1kg, and the only one currently on eBay is going for a bargain at >$16000!

The other lens that nobody has mentioned for those who might want a zoom with a longer tele end is the Contax 35-135/f3.3. This is no heavier or larger than the 28-85/3.3 and although I have never used one myself, has a very good reputation. They are not anything like as common as the 28-85 and due to supply and demand do cost a bit more. I have seen them from time to time on Fleabay at around £7-800. Details here Contax Cameras UK Limited

I think there were 200+100=300 finally produced. A run of 200 before it was discontinued. After the furore of the production stop, parts for a further 100 were "found" :D. It was a superb lens, stop for stop equal to the primes.

The last one I saw a few weeks ago on eBay had a BIN of $30,000. The listing did disappear/complete? after a few days.

Is the 35-70/f2.8 any better than the 28-90/f2.8 or was it a toe in the water leading towards the 28-90? Given that it is heavier as well, I struggle to see the advantage other than rarity.

Perhaps some might see it as a minor advantage but the 35-70 is f/2.8 right through its zoom range whereas the 28-90 wanders out to f/4.5 at the long end.

How would you rate the Vario Elmar 28-70 f/3.5-4.5?

I used to own one. It was better than most reviews make out, but nothing special. The 35-70 4.0 is a couple of classes superior.

I have the 35-70 f4.0 Vario Elmar-R and would agree with Jaap. It works very well on the M240 and other mirrorless cameras. It's not too bulky and it's lightweight. If f4.0 is not a limitation then it's only disadvantage is that the front of the lens to which filters are attached rotates as you focus so it's not so convenient to use with polarisers. The lens hood unscrews and can be reversed for storage.

I have the 28-90 asph and have had the 28-70 3.5-4.5 sigma made lens, both used on my DMRs. I agree that the 28-90 asph is a stellar zoom lens, not far off the 35-70 2.8 asph. Whilst the sigma made 28-70 is not rated highly by Puts, it still produces pretty competent pictures. Here is an older pic from 2007 of Oscar Peterson from the top of the Royal Albert Hall in London - cropped, but still looks pretty good to me. Like everything you pays your money and makes your choice.

Personally if money was an issue, i would buy the last 35-70/4 ROM lens (with or without the ROM). By far the best value for money in the Leica standard zoom.

I have asked Dirk Rosler of Japan Exposures if he can have another try to get his lens guru, Mr S Miyazaki, to convert a Contax 35-70 G lens to M. In the past he said he could not do it but I think that was because there was no way to insert a RF cam sleeve. I have said I am perfectly happy to have it non-RF coupled. It is a high contrast lens and should trigger focus peaking well. It is also tiny in comparison to all the SLR lenses and at 300g, very light. I am waiting to hear. I said I felt that there could be a reasonable market for this conversion if it needed the cost of some custom parts to be spread over a number of lenses.

Having read all the posts, and researched on this mid-range, I've finally settled on the Vario 35-70 f4. I did take a look at the 28-90. There are some mint condition lenses floating around. But somehow, apart from the price differential, I felt the lens would be a bit large'ish' on the M240, perhaps not too suitable for my needs on the streets..... ( now that didn't sound right, did it!!)

I was not aware you wanted a lens for street shooting. If I had been aware of that, I would have suggested a non-R lens.

Great choice. I really really like mine. I bought it from a fellow forum member.

What I don’t understand is why anyone with a M body would want to shoot with a standard length R lens. Using the RF with a 35 or 50 M lens is almost intuitive, as well as being compact. I can understand using the R-M adapter and EVF for long lenses.

As I don’t have a M, just a M9, M6TTL and M2, maybe I just don’t get it. OK I do have 2 DMRs for my long glass. Handholding a 280/4 or a 180/2 on the M seems ludicrous, although these balance really well on the DMR.

As an old R user I sure wish I still had some of the wonderful primes I owned back then but I do not. What I wanted was a zoom option on my M. I think a lot of M shooters still have their R equipment and simply want the option to use them. It takes a little practicing your technique but heck it sure is fun.
