A larger sensor will give more shallow DOF.

That's exactly what I meant. When I want shallower DoFs, I use my other (bigger sensor) cameras, obviously. But there are occasions where I prefer the extended DoF of a model such the Digilux 2. Personally I see the Digilux 2 replacement like a sort of big brother of the Dlux 6.

But I admit that here in this thread the discussion of such Digilux 2 replacement is off topic.

Sure - if This is the camera, it is not going to excite the denizens of internet fora and facebook groups - but then it clearly isn't supposed to.

On the other hand, it's a unique product (fixed lens APS-c Zoom). Leica don't need a mass market, the question is not whether we like it, but whether others will buy it?

As a sideline I showed the leaked document to my wife, who is a good photographer, but is about as likely to read an internet forum on photography as one on fly fishing. Her immediate response was that it looks really promising - she likes the X2, and she would like this more. As Andy said, a Digilux 2 replacement would be welcome to many.

Thank you Jono, as always.

I accept your thoughts but offer a small counter point that this large market you refer to are CERTAINLY not following a slow opening box tease on the Internet either. Which still makes it a stoooopid campaign in my opinion.

Well, as I mentioned with regard to the M9 - leaks of French dealer spec sheets are batting 1.000 so far. So I'm leaning that way until there is equally serious evidence to the contrary (open-mindedness is good!)

I am inclined to take the rumour seriously. At least it stops me getting excited. Seems to be a reasonably sensible release, but more X to meet the demands for a zoom lens version. I guess I can live with using M as a generic badge; "Made in Germany?" :D

But you can't deny that it works in getting a lot of people excited about guessing what the new camera might be, and creating a lot of noise on the Internet - I'd say that's pretty smart!

From a Hong Kong Leica dealer:

[Leica] PESO: RG Lewis and Leica M frustrations

If the leaked photo is accurate this camera would be a good fit for the 'hers' side of a gift set.

Agreed that it's generating buzz, in small geeky Leica forums.

Disagree it's "smart". Effectively depends on outcome I guess. If the long tease reveals a fat hairy ugly lady the punters leave cursing under their breath! ;)

Indeed, if only an E is so outrageous, imagine now that Leica itself called the X2 micro-M and the Dlux nano-M... :)

One more photoshop exercise.... :D (something better could have been done about "sticking onto" the Lux asph..)..... but I understand that is fun to dream... frankly any announced Leica with fixed lens is not so exciting, be it even a FF Zoom AF EVF etc... (and even if I admit that it could be an excellent camera)

The Mini M. M for 'Misadventure'.

All the M and R lens owners that can't afford or else can't justify spending $8k for a 240 now go back to following SONY and Ricoh.

This hurts those already invested in Leica the most.

My final ponderings on the subject are thus:

Sure the specs sound a little lacklustre after owning an M9 and waiting for an M. But there will be plenty of folks who this camera will appeal to. I had owned an Canon 5DII for several years when I made in roads into Leica land with the X1. It was a joke really, terrible AF but the IQ was mind blowing. It is this sole reason why I sold that and got an M9 only a few months later. I dropped a huge amount of cash on a camera that was on paper a much lesser beast than my ageing 5DII. But once I had experienced that stella IQ I was totally taken and have spent several thousand on lenses since. i was in the Leica mindset and could put aside the limitations and really focus on the positives of the system.

This (if it is indeed real) would be an excellent introduction to the Leica landscape and the higher ISO capabilities might negate the slower lens. If you are a bokeh hunter then you already know that it's not the right camera for you. It looks like it'll have that sumptuous Leica quality and feeling to hold and use, so you'd probably forgive its shortcomings and concentrate on refining your art and the glorious IQ that it will undoubtedly have.

Remember the proof if in the pudding. Maybe we should reserve judgment until we see the output of it before we criticise? I won't be cancelling my M order as I love the changeable lens style of shooting but I can see this being of huge appeal to a certain market, not a huge market, but a market none the less and it'll probably be a success for the company. Roll on the 11th I say!

My wife who soots her X1 wants that new camera too. I will stay with my Konica Dual as my travel zoom

If this is it then it will be exactly what many here were asking for when the X series was first launched......

I remember the gnashing of teeth over the X1's fixed lens and many posts arguing that, if an interchangeable lens wasn't to be, 'it should have been a zoom'.

....

Please allow me to call this statement "nonsense".

I am owner of about a dozen(+) M-lenses and have decided not to spend money for a M 240. Nevertheless there a dozens of possibilities to use my lenses without "following Sony and Ricoh" - even though I have nothing against their products.

If the leaks are true and Leica will offer a camera with the specs shown in the leak, this will just be another superfluous product on the market, but nothing at all to make someone turn around or follow anything else in this or that way.

Two weeks ago nobody was expecting any new camera from Leica at the moment. Those who decide for Sony or Ricoh or anyother product will have their reasons without any funny black box placed on the Leica website. If not this would be sad for Sony or Ricoh et al.

and the French image like this:

And if you notice, the image in the box (Leica's) appears to show a lens NOT going up into the cap plate. The "leaked" image has a large overlap. Really doesn't appear to be the same camera.
