  2. Hi all, I wear glasses and have been challenged for the past year with seeing the full rangefinder view especially with wider lenses like the 35mm f1.4 Summilux M and of course the 28 Summicron M. Because I can't often see the frame lines unless I'm shooting in 50 or longer, My only other option is to shoot with the Visoflex, but I don't like how it impacts the nimble compact ergonomics of the M11-P I currently own. I'm starting to think that the M11-P is no longer a camera that fits my needs, but I still want to use the beautiful M glass I own, so I've been considering moving my M lenses over to an SL system, which I understand is the next best thing. So I'm trying to decide which camera to choose. I mainly shoot street, documentary and portrait photography. The SL2-S and SL3-S appeal to me mostly on price and low light performance. The SL3-S sounds great as it seems to have solved some issues with better AF, although I will mainly be shooting on M lenses. I also hear from a lot of people that the SL2 is an amazing camera especially when shooting with M glass, but I also hear that it's not great in low light. Which I think is important to me. I used to own the SL3, but I didn't like it for a number of reasons, which I won't get into in this post. So here are my options: 1. SL3-S: Since it's new it has all the latest and greatest, so I may down the line use the AF with AF lenses, but for now this purchase is mainly for M glass, so maybe it's not necessary to spend that kind of money especially if I'm going to just use it for M glass? 2. SL2-S: This seems like the best value option. I can get a new in the box SL2-S for around $2600 right now, and it has great low light and if I'm using it just with M glass for now, it seems like a good option 3. SL2: I keep hearing how magical this sensor is. And it's currently around $3300 or less used. My only concern with this is that I hear it's not great with low light and I seem to always find myself in low light situations. I'm leaving the SL3 out because I used to own it and it's also the most expensive so I don't see a use case where this makes sense. But of course if you feel I'm overlooking something please convince me! Which one would you pick if your primary use case is to migrate the use of M glass from an M11 to an SL body, and you shoot documentary, street, Family and Portrait works? Thanks!!
  3. Hi, I've just purchased a Manual Focus lens from 7Artisans (L Mount). I've switched the camera to Manual Focus, entered 18mm as the lens profile. I have tried set "Focus Peaking" to ON in one of the Capture Assistant profiles and I've also assigned to a control button. But it DOES NOT SWITCH ON. There is no focus peaking in Live View. I can magnify the view and see the lens is focussing. The "Focus Peaking" shows in the Preview after I've taken the picture. This seems like a (really bad) bug to me. This works on the M series cameras with an "unknown" lens in Live View. I've tried this with two different MF lens, so this is not specific behaviour to a particular lens (or even adaptor, as I've tried that variation too). Any suggestions or experience with this?
  4. Hey, one thing struck me when I had the SL3 and the SL3-s in hand. Why would you put the Pc sync on the left side of the pentaprism? there is enough space down where the HDMi , USBC , Audio in and out ports are. If I recall it this was also the position on my Canon EOS 5Ds xxx. Everything would be sealed under the rubber and not another position to care about. This is the one design choice that I don't understand. The other thing is: why could this not be solved with USBC? Why the timecode needed a pc sync? This is one of the things I don't get. Main issue was the timecode > I see that many companies (tentacles) are able to do this with USBC. And even more they can sync many devices over their app? The iPhone has a Usbc port and is connected to the camera via the app. It could have been solved easily via app and then sync up to 10 Leica's . And if you need other cameras with the timecode > Tc out with a USB-C cable to BNC > then you can reach any camera , Arri , Red, Sony etc. Why would you put an PC Socket on a camera in 2023-2024 if the camera has a perfect connection to an app? THe only thing the camera needs is a tc generator and reader if another camera is the master. Any idea? I don't mind the function, but it surprises me how it's implemented. cheers Peter Here is a German company that makes devices that sync cameras : https://tentaclesync.com We use these tentacles to sync audio and video on production. there a many more devices this is only an example.
  5. Hello I'm new to this forum and Leica camera having only changed to Leica in the last 6 months. I use a mixture of Broncolor and Profoto flash packs and I was wondering if anyone has had issues with getting remote triggers to fire with their SL cameras. I have an SL2 and just recently an SL3 but firing flashes using either a broncolor RFS trigger (its an older trigger with one pin on the bottom) and both Profoto Air remote (non TTL) and the Profoto Connect remote for Leica (which is brand new) flash triggering is unreliable and intermittent. Has anyone had experience with this? I thought originally it may be an issue with the hotshoe on my SL2 (as I bought it second hand) but I'm having the same issues with the SL3. I do wish it had a flash nipple (call me old school) as it would be nice to have backup flash firing option. Is there a menu setting that I'm missing or any adaptor anyone can suggest? Just for context I'm not a newby at photography, I have been a professional ad shooter for 25 years and most of my work has been using Phaseone equipment (which I still use) but have recently swapped out of Canons (R5/R3)for 35mm. Thanks in advance E
  6. Hello soon more time for travel and photography. I have a q2 and om1 for wilderness photo I love gadgets and have no issue with more with good arguments. Complement with Q3/43 or M11 or SL3, or all? Everyone are entitled to have an opinion and please avoid discuss and comment other’s opinions in non respect way m11 cool camera and could see why would like rangefinder as kind of old school, SL3 for quality and versality, q3 for size and travel friendly
  7. Hi all. Anyone knows if Match Technical, the makers of the SL2 Thumbs up ( among others), is still in business? Have not been able to find any info online - Interested in finding out if they will be making a thumb support for the SL3 Thanks
  10. Hey, I miss something that most prof cameras have. A push front wheel ! any thoughts on this? It’s much easier to select the shutter on a frontwheel then putting the finger all the way up to the sl2 frontwheel. And it would free the top wheel to do other stuff. You would barely see it. And you would have two pushwheels for execution of tasks. what do you think ? stupid don’t Need that Yeah Great 👍 thanxs Peter Lund www.eachfilm.de
  11. I've been eyeing this lens for my SL3, but before I buy it, I want to learn about people's back-button focus with this (or other Panasonic/Sigma) lens on the SL3. I have read that BBF doesn't work on Panasonic Pro lenses, but then I saw conflicting information. Does anyone have this combo, and have you gotten BBF to work with it?
  13. Been waiting for the SL3 and now need to choose the best SL body for me and my needs. I have the original SL and the 24-90 but much prefer shooting with M lenses (I use Zeiss, 28, 35, 50). My photography is mainly street, family, travel. Reasons to upgrade (in no particular order): IBIS (key driver for me), improved grip, rounder design, better user interface (and quick menu), improved EVF. I normally default to buying the latest and greatest (SL3) but I don’t need better AF and virtually never use video. Am undecided about sensor size (24MP has been fine so far, not crying out for 60) and would like improved ISO. So guess that is pointing me towards the SL2 or 2-S. Anyone else in similar situation? Guess used 2 and 2-S prices will drop soon. Likely to be any U.K. deals on new copies? Thanks.
  14. Hey, I would love if all Leica Sl cameras could focus stack. Now with the new SL3 it should be easy to achieve. So many things you can do with this feature. 1. focus stacking 2. pixel shift handheld (like Panasonic) What's your favorite feature that is missing?
  15. Maybe someone who knows more than me can help... or even someone working with an SL and e.g. an Atomos. Leica's list of video resolutions adds information over what's possible on SD or on HDMI... But I'm confused about what the Mbps information means... shouldn't these over HDMI be dictated by the recorder and video codec being used? For example: Leica states the SL2-S can only do Long-GOP 150 Mbps when using UHD and 24fps (while C4K 24fps strangely uses All-I 400 Mbps). That definitely is the internal .mp4, but is that also applicable to HDMI recording? I hope that doesn't mean the SL2-S can only push 150 Mbps through the HDMI when choosing UHD 24fps? (ProRes422 HQ has target data rate of 707 Mbps in UHD 24...) I mean it should be possible theoretically, because the SL2-S can do C4K 24fps ProRes Raw recording over HDMI after all... The SL2-S can do 150 Mbps in UHD 24fps, 400 Mbps in C4K 24fps. The SL3 can do 400 Mbps in UHD 24fps and 600 Mbps in C4K 24fps. That is interesting... nice one SL3, but over HDMI they all should be equal... right? Is it a raw stream over HDMI that then will be recorded as 707 Mbps ProRes422 HQ? To make matters worse, some of the information is split between SD and HDMI in the list of the SL3. (Have mercy on me I never had an SL but consider the SL2-S now) My head spins 😂 I hope someone has the answers! THANKS!
  16. Greetings all, hope everyone here is having a wonderful start to Spring! Wanted to see if anyone knows if there is a 3rd party that makes an eye-cup attachment for the SL3 or SL2 EVF (they have same EVF dimensions) I am looking to have a more fully blacked out viewing window like the reference below. Any thoughts greatly appreciated! Thanks, BEN JACKS // www.ben-jacks.com
  18. I slightly esoteric observation I spotted today. I was trying out the Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21 on an SL3 today and just for the fun of it I also processed the files with LR Denoise (set at 50). I noticed that this revealed some detail that I would have otherwise missed. For on-line use the issue may be a little moot because you may never see the image at full resolution unless it's cropped quite a bit. But it's there for sure. I have two images below one without Denoise applied and one with Denise applied at the maximum size the forum allows -long edge 2480 - each followed by a 1:1 crop with the long edge also at 2480. The wood post near the middle of the cropped images has a handbag with the slim red cord slung over the post. In the non-de noised image the cord can barely be seen but in the demonised version the cord is quite clear. This is not to say that I would always prefer to Denoise images, because I think many images also loose a certain crispness. Still, it was something that surprised me. First the full image with no Denoise now the cropped section of the above image Now, the Denoise enhanced version of the full image now the cropped section of the above enhanced image On looking at the images here the difference doesn't look as distinct as it does on my monitor. However if you click through and look at the images at full resolution posted, you will see the difference more clearly.
  19. While in Japan, I got me the ultimate Japanese Leica bag. It is a bag for the Leica S/SL system but looks amazingly universal. The bag was conceived and developed entirely by Leica Professional Store Tokyo. It holds a S/SL camera body and three lenses, it can also store a tablet, charger, batteries, etc. and is perfect for a big two M/dozen lenses setup. The front has a tag embossed with "Leica Professional Store Tokyo". The bag costs ¥60,500 (10% tax included) or ¥55,000 before tax. it reminds me of our old family Olivetti typewriter bag. The design is genius, cowhide leather combined with synthetic suede and red interior. Tested immediately, super comfy wear, and fully water (downpour) repellent & fast dry.
  20. Leica will give me only 67% of market value on a trade-in, which is not enough with my present economy. I thought, do I really need one? Is 66 megapixels really that much better than 47? I'm attracted, of course, to the putative faster autofocus and the extra knob on the left, but is that enough to make the switch. Just thinking out loud.
  21. Hello, I’m close to buying a new Leica. Trying hard to make the right decision. All options remain on the table, but I’m leaning towards a SL2-S or SL3. I made the decision to go Leica about a year ago. At the time, I was excited. I thought it’d be easy. Little did I know. The good thing is: it’s been a year. I’ve used that time wisely, I hope, to consider a lot (reading posts, watching videos, and trying out different cameras). I’m almost there. But before I pull the trigger again (more about that in a moment), I’d love to get some input, so if you have any thoughts to share … I’m all ears! A little about me: I’ve got a good amount of life experience and been a photographer for many years. Over the past decades I’ve shot Nikon film cameras & different mirrorless cameras including Fuji, Sony and Ricoh. I enjoy shooting landscapes, city buildings and some street in the endless pursuit of creating photographic art. I have a passion for B&W. So much so that after nearly a year, I made the decision to purchase a “like new” Q2 Monochrom. Unfortunately, it had debris in the viewfinder that I found distracting so I returned it. The experience was a good one because it caused me think even deeper about my commitment level and what I really want. They say the Leica Q’s are the “gateway drug” in the Leica world and I now see why. Yeah, even after a very short time with one. I’m someone that would be very happy with a Monochrom only camera. I shoot 90% B&W (at least), and the ability shoot at night with very high ISO’s with a camera that doesn’t have a bayer filter, and noise that looks more filmic is a very attractive proposition. If I missed color, I could always carry my trust Ricoh GRIII I Ruled Out a Leica Q I’ve ruled out another Q camera for several reasons, with the biggest being that I’ve got some wonderful vintage lenses and want to use them on a Leica (rather than continue using them on my Sony I think). Maybe a M11 or M10 Monochrom? I thought an M11 monochrome … or maybe an M10? … was the answer but I’m not sure a rangefinder’s for me. I mean I LOVE the look. Truly. It’s … beautiful. But I love shooting fast lenses. The rangefinder focusing … nice … but when it comes to focusing some lenses like a f/0.95 or even f/1.2 on a rangefinder … I want an EVF for critical focus. Sure, there’s a great external EVF for the M11 … and I’d be fine with buying that if I needed to, but in my opinion, it kinda messes with the whole rangefinder aesthetic to have to put that on the hot shoe. Also, I’ve heard more than one person talk about their rangefinder’s going out of alignment - and needing to be sent back in for recalibration. I’ve also read about freezing issues some have said they’d experienced with their Leica M11’s on this forum. On top of that, I like to focus CLOSE sometimes (not macro but down to 3/4 or 1/2 a meter) with my vintage lenses … I’ve can do that with an adapter on my Sony A7RIVa with vintage m mount lenses that normally wouldn’t be able to focus that close but would not be able to do that when using them on a Leica M. That frankly is a big deal (for me). Leica SL-2S or SL3? So that’s led me to consider a Leica SL-2s or maybe a SL3? Pros: Ability to convert M lenses and focus close using M to CL adapters. Check Built-in beautiful EVF. Check. More affordable than a Leica M11 Monochrom - check No calibration needed. Cons: No monochrome sensor in sight. Sigh. It’s so … BIG!! The M11 looks so much more inviting. Big Red Dot & Big Leica in big white letters … sheesh! I so prefer the look of the monochrom cameras. Discreet. So tape it up and cover up the dot I guess is the solution there. Perhaps not the best for street? More suited for studio than street? In conclusion: At the end of the day - is a Leica SL2s and/or SL3 worth spending thousands of dollars more - or should I just stick with my 60 megapixel Sony A7R-IVa and call it a day? Has anyone upgraded from the SL2-s to the SL3 .. .and if so, was it worth it? And why? Has anyone owned both a Leica M10/M11 along with a Leica SL series camera and if so, which do you prefer and why? Anyone move from a Leica Monochrome camera to the SL line ? Any regrets? Thoughts and/or Recommendation would be much appreciated. Thanks!
