Hello Kriehuber,

Welcome to the Forum.

The M1 (Begin 1959.) & MD (Begin 1964.) also have external frame counters.

The external frame counters were a step backwards to the time when earlier Leicas required the user to manually reset the frame counter to the appropriate position after loading & advancing the film.

Best Regards,

Michael

I have found that when using 36 exposure film resetting the counter is not necessary, it is designed so well that once you have finished one film and unloaded it, you load a fresh one and simply wind it until 1 is indicated again, that’s your first shot of the new film.

I have also realized that long time ago, I think I have never touch it (reset it myself) since ... who knows...

I agree, also can't remember when I last reset it myself

Beautiful M2, Mr Brown.  And with my favorite focal length lens.  What more is needed?  The M2 is in my top two Leica film camera bodies, the other being the M4 due to its film loading and rewind.

Every M2 I have owned has been button rewind and I have never pressed the rewind button by mistake.

So clean! How is it the 35mm voigtlander? I am thinking of a 1.4f instead of my summicron Asph, but the Summilux is an investment...so just wondering how it perfoms in film that lens

My favorite 35 is the 35f2.8 C-Biogon.  It may be the sharpest 35 made and if you can live with the f2.8 aperture I hardily recommend it.  For the price I also have a 35f1.2 and still saved thousands compared to a 35 Summilux.

The Leica game is not about not using Leica glass.

Also, it’s not about using a similar focal length, but cheaper. Anybody can buy a Kiev camera and brag about how they saved 934.57$ over the real thing. It’s so easy.

No.

The Leica game is about using Leica, and about supporting Leica.

Supporting Cosina is the Cosina game.

If photography is important, the brand of lens is less so.

I used Leitz/Leica lenses for many years, so I know them well.

Later on I bought some compatible (or adapted) third parties lenses, I'm happy to have done it as those are not bad and come with

features I can't find in Leitz/Leica lenses.

My first good surprise was Olympus Zuiko for OM 2/21mm while at that time, Leitz offered 3.4 or 4/21mm that I had also,  but f/2 was something else,

kind of Summicron in 21mm, by then I used Summicron 35/50/90 I called "trio for Kodachrome".

I use this combo for so long

forgot that a bit of the lens top shows at bottom of the 21mm VF,

not bothering at all 😇

this M2 before me may have taken "a million" pictures

the VF was replaced by M4's style frames,  not a big trouble, it is so smooth

at first the worn shutter release ennoyed me, but in use nothing to complain

Love the Olympus 21 on your M2. Zone focussing at that focal length is definitely dooable. My 1st 35mm camera in the 1950s had only zone focussing and it worked out pretty well until I could afford a proper rangefinder camera.

Nice M2. Almost as ratty as one of mine.

Why waste valuable film on a M2 with a non-Leica lens? I don’t do that. Life is way too short.

We can all wear a Tuxedo with Birkenstock sandals. What would be the point? Some would argue that the whole Point of “shoes” is the “strictly protect the underfeet”... LOL.

Why do you bother about non-Leica lenses that people enjoy using? Different lenses have different characters and many of us like to work with those options. I am very happy that this possibility exists, since using a Leica body doesn't force us to only use Leitz/Leica lenses but instead gives us the freedom to work with other material as well. By the way, David Douglas Duncan loved Leica bodies but used Nikon lenses on them.
