Launched the Fotos app and the new firmware isn't available for me.  The Fotos app shows my camera having version 2.0.2

Any thoughts as to why it's not available? I'm in the USA, Northern CA, assuming that makes any difference.

Have you tried downloading directly and performing the update via an SD card?

Thanks for the suggestion, I was able to update my camera via Fotos app to 2.1.1

I think I might go the SD card route from now on, the Fotos app makes me nervous, like I'm going to brick the camera.

I never use apps for this sort of thing - too risky if connection is lost

Hi jhonzatkl,

had the same issue in previous firmwares….. very seldom:

composing the picture in single mode, pressing the button…. But nothing happens. As far as I can remember I had to switch off switch on the camera.

I don't have a M11, so have no particular knowledge or experience other than having followed the M11 saga. In your place though, and reading those instructions, I would not have reinserted a card used under the previous firmware. I would have only have used a reformatted card.

But then I never leave and reuse cards with images on them - I download to my PC or laptop daily, and, after backing up (to give me two new copies of my images), format the card before reusing it. SD cards are cheap and convenient means of temporarily storing images after shooting, but I don't trust them for longer term storage than I absolutely have to.

Thank you for your reply -- that's interesting, I didn't think about this, that this freezing problem could be caused by using an SD card which has been formatted under the previous firmware.  I will try with SD cards freshly formatted with the new firmware.

The only thing I wonder:  As mentioned in another reply, I did experience this kind of freezing after trying to wake up the M11 from stand-by mode already with the original firmware, i.e., the firmware version which was on the camera when I got it.  So before I did the first firmware upgrade, "by construction" I always used SD cards which had been formatted with the (at that time) current firmware on the camera -- but I already experienced this kind of freezing even in this situation...?

In any case, I will try what you propose, and will report...  ...thanks again!

Just updated the firmware in my M11. It took two or three minutes, then I heard the distinctive click of the shutter/switch off sound, and the screen went blank. According to the manual, it should restart at this point, but nothing else happened.

Camera was still on, and awoke when I pressed the Menu button. Scrolled through the settings, everything was as before, the way I'd set up the buttons was unchanged, and the camera information confirms it's firmware 2.1.1.

Even the date and time were correct, although the manual says those would need to be reset after a firmware upgrade. The compensation dial still requires a press in to operate, just as before. Everything seems to be working fine. Does all that sound about right, or should I manually restart the camera, just to be sure?

Exactly the same thing with me. I didn't get a screen prompting me that the installation was successful and to restart the camera. I pressed the Menu button and was able to check that the firmware was 2.1.1, date and time were correct, profiles still there, etc.

Seems to be working fine so far, but might restart the camera just in case too.

I'm getting accurate colors and no freezes yet with 2.1.1:

I updated yesterday via Fotos app and the update went without a problem. Unfortunately, today, while taking photos of an event (where I took a total of about 600 photos), I repeatedly experienced a freezes...

Bummmmmmmer, this was what we were hoping it would fix

Installed it. From FOTOS and no issues. Turned it on and nothing seemed to have changed in my personal settings.

Here's hoping for the best.

What I am noticing:

The camera feels more responsive on turning on and the shutter reaction feels very different than before (IMHO). I assume the timing of the shutter response has been adjusted in the firmware.

I have not taken my M11-P out for a shoot yet since the FW 2.1.1 upgrade, and I have experienced freezes in the past (in very unfortunate circumstances where I lost shots that were important to me (first day of getting it, and the entire first month was BRUTAL until I changed a few things in the menu system and changed my card to a faster card. Since then, I have had freezes on occasion but nothing quite as bad as that first go.))

I will monitor this and get back to the forum. We all use our cameras differently so there will be different experiences. I know many dealers I have talked to cite the SD card as an issue, I've upgraded to the v90 faster cards as suggested and still had issues. People have said to only shoot at 36MP or even 18MP, which is crazy since if you have 60MP why can't you shoot it? I've done these things and still had freezes, so who knows.

I am typically all-in on these firmware updates, and typically upgrade (eventually) to the new generation of cameras, but as of now I only own the M11-P in the current slew of 60MP BSI sensors. I've used the other three iteration of the sensors (the M11-M, Q3 and SL3) and of the three the SL3 seemed the most solid – likely because of the new Mastro III processor! The Q3 doesn't much interest me and I'm not a big fan of the flippy-floppy screen on both the Q3 and SL3, I like my Ms.

I want the M11-P to be my workhorse, I use it a lot don't get me wrong, but currently it's still my M10-M, S, and SL2S if I want to MAKE SURE I get the shot as I don't trust it fully. If I would have had an M10-R BP over an M10-R red dot I likely would not have upgraded this generation.

At 60MP, this will likely be my last camera upgrade for a while... so I keep it in hopes these FW upgrades make it as solid as the M10 was at its last FW.

I'm still hopeful. I love the images out of the M11. Just sometimes it's operation has been a major disappointment!

I saw this too, the colors changed with this update. It was pretty "live" before but this time it seems really really accurate and good. Maybe it's our imaginations, but this firmware makes me almost feel like I have a different camera! Maybe its taking my WB and EC readings more seriously (although Jono and others have said there is no change to these settings it may be something else that is also related to the other "fixed/adjusted" things within this FW?!)

No freezes yet. The shutter sound and feeling seems more solid. I don't know what they did but something is very different. Fingers crossed. I didn't have as many freezes as I did before changing a few settings, but there were enough that it made me have a backup M10-M and SL2 just in case.

It would be nice to just carry ONE camera and have the piece of mind I can get the shot.

Did you take photos in quick succession? If there are approx. 12 DNG with 60 MP in the buffer memory, the camera will not release the shutter until the memory is empty enough for another image.

but the red characters for either the ISO setting or “Auto” or the light scale (which normally do appear after a few seconds) do not appear and the M11 is completely frozen, i.e. does not react to any button being pressed or to the power switch.

The camera is not yet ready to take a photo when the shutter is open and the light frames are flashing. Instead, you have to wait approx. 1 second until the red LED to the right of the display has stopped lighting up. This is very irritating and Leica should change the starting procedure so that the shutter opens last so that you have an acoustic signal that the camera is ready.

Upgraded both my M11P and M11M and no issues through FOTOS, didn’t have any freezing before and that continues with the latest firmware.

Interestingly this update doesn’t overwrite your profiles and therefore requiring an export before you upgrade. I do anyway just in case before I start the process but no prompt to do so on both camera’s when using the FOTOS app.

There do seem to be some colour and speed adjustments to but overall I continue to be delighted with all 3 M11 variants that I have - no freezing and so much better than my M10’s on a whole range of fronts.

Updated a M11M which already had no issues.

I always copy the firmware to the Camera’s working SD card for updates, after a format in camera.

It went as expected, perhaps a bit slow to move the progress bar initially.
Red flashing light at the end kept flashing for a minute or so after the updated & Re-Start message appeared.
Camera itself, restarted after that.

I didn’t notice any change other than the FW version.

I finally updated, doing it via SD card. I had to take out the battery to restart, (this is stated in the manual, so no surprise).

I used the camera already, not extensively, but for a couple of hundred images, and it worked without issue. My camera was working okay before the firmware update, only very rarely freezing, so I can't say if it's better now given it was not really bad before. I can only say I am quite happy with the M11, no regrets in upgrading from the M10.

Sadly, all this uncertainty about camera freezes, Leica taking two years to fix it, lack of communication from leica,  and the initial freezes I had with mine, kind of left me with a sour taste... I never had to go through anything similar with any other camera manufacturer... it felt like Leica was a startup company that had too much on its hands.

I am sending my SL2s for service now, depending on how it goes, I will remain a Leica user or start thinking about moving elsewhere.

Sadly, my previously freeze-free M11-P had its first lock-up today after updating to the new firmware.

I was out shooting and took 2 shots in relatively quick succession (maybe 1 second apart), the camera became unresponsive and the rear screen went black. I switched the camera off and the red light stayed on, then switched it back on but still nothing. Removed the battery then re-inserted and switched the camera on again and seems to be functioning like normal once again.

I was having issues with corrupted DNGs previously that have not yet surfaced with the new firmware but I seem to have traded one issue for another.

Hopefully, others have better luck.

Happened to me once too. I updated my user profiles and since then i got no more issues.

Yes that's what I'm experiencing as well. Colors have become much more accurate and pleasant, with less magenta tint in the white balance. Even the SOOC JPEGs look much nicer, for me they've become "usable".

Leica has said in the update instructions: Various errors and causes of freezes have been fixed; Leica has not said that all causes of freezes have been eliminated. So we should not have exaggerated hopes, even if it would be justified to expect that freezes only occur very, very rarely and not shortly after the release of the update.

So there is still a lot for Leica to do.
