Well, I just became a casualty of the latest M11 firmware update. While the update was downloading from the FOTOS app on my phone it hung up, then I got the message on my phone that the transfer failed. I tried again, and the same thing happened, and the update in the camera continued to indicate it was downloading the update but after about 7 minutes of this (after getting the transfer failed message on my phone), I turned off the camera. It is now dead. Won't start up, won't indicate it is receiving power when plugged into a usb power outlet either. BTW, the battery was fully charged and the SD card had been formatted yesterday. I called Leica store in LA and they said to bring it in because it must be sent to Leica repair. Maybe I shouldn't have turned it off until letting 15 minutes more go by. I have major family events and travel in the next month. Does anyone know if Leica offers loaner cameras?

Oh dear, that is a nasty thing to happen. I never understood 1. why Leica enabled updating through FOTOS, 2 why people update through FOTOS. It adds nothing but introduces the risk of the update failing catastrophically (like here) through a glitch in the WiFi connection.

I would advise to stick to the tried and tested more secure SD card update.

Rockyocean,   Jaapv offers very sage advice when doing updates.  You unfortunately experienced a M11 bricking.   Your M11 should be covered by the warranty.  I would suggest you make sure your M11 is registered with Leica, take a copy of your bill of sale to the Leica Store and M11.  Just say, it locked up during firmware 2.1.1 updating and leave it with them.  It will go in for Leica rehab at Wetzlar.  Always keep in mind Jaapv's updating advice.  I always use a SD card for updating.  The good news, your M11 will come back working with the latest firmware and ready to shoot masterpiece photographs...hopefully without the magenta cast.   r/ Mark

On second thought-it is a desperation move- leave the battery out for 24 hours before you take the camera in. It is weekend anyway, nothing will happen before Monday and there is a chance that it might revive it.

Thanks so much for the encouraging words and advice. I don't think I have ever enjoyed any purchase in my life (including cars) as much as I have this M11 with the photos I have produced.  I did try the SD card approach first, but after downloading to my Mac it appeared as a document file and so I assumed it wasn't the actual update. When I first purchased the camera three months ago I did a firmware update through the Fotos app and it worked fine so I assumed I could try this again. I did register the camera immediately after I got it. Do you have any idea how long it usually takes for Leica repair to return cameras?

Rockyocean,   I just spoke with a Leica Store owner that I have known for nearly 2 decades.  He told me, there is a large backlog of repairs at Wetzlar.  Your Leica Store in LA might be able to work something for you since its a flagship store for Leica.  All said, you are looking at at least a month or more. Try Jaapv's suggestion in his post #111. It might do the trick.  In your post above, it sounds like your initial download was the instructions for the firmware.  Leica firmware has a distinct file number, for example:  leica_m11-p_v2.1.1.fw .   r/ Mark

Mark,

Thanks for helping me out with the info. I should've delayed the update. I have several trips this summer, including significant family events, so I should've been more discerning. With so many electronic devices; computers, phones, car navigation, etc that regularly have firmware updates with no problems, I guess I assumed the Leica update would work fine. I'll post again after I visit the LA store.

That's the worst! I thought that would be my fate today too.

I posted a very similar story earlier after the M11 would not update the firmware from the SD card..Tried twice, different cards..then used the app had some issues connecting, half way in got a message that I had lost connection but the update continued and it went ok.

Leica foto downloads the update and then when fully transferred to the camera performs the update. This process is just as safe as an SD card.  Watch the updating process on the app and camera and you can see it only updates AFTER the files is fully transferred.

Theoretically maybe but in actuality you are adding in the connection to the camera from either the USB-C cable or wireless. Lost connection adds more complexity and I only used the app after the update would not be read from the camera on the SD card. I lost connection midway through the update today. I've done many Leica firmware updates this was a first. I could easily have wound up with a brick.

Sure it sounds easy and convenient to update via the app but seems like accident waiting to happen. Baffled why I could not update via SD card..and no it wasn't the instruction file lol..

Of course. It would be stupid to do it on the fly. But if it updates from a file that is corrupted during transfer?  It probably even does a checksum but that won’t catch every error.

Never understood that, but I suppose it's a generational thing. I wonder which is the main culprit, the lack of SD card slots in computers or the fact that consumers don't demand such slots.
